Guwahati, Jun 26: Assam Police have seized a major consignment of narcotic substances valued at approximately Rs 10.8 crore during an overnight operation in Sribhumi district, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma describing the action as another significant success in the state's ongoing campaign against drug trafficking.
According to the Chief Minister, the operation was conducted by the Sribhumi Police, who intercepted the contraband and arrested one person allegedly linked to the smuggling network. Efforts are currently underway to trace and apprehend the remaining suspects.

Sharing details of the operation on social media platform X, Sarma praised the police for the successful seizure.
"Rs 10.8 crore is a heavy price to pay for crossing paths with Assam Police. Kudos to Sribhumi Police for intercepting a massive consignment during an overnight operation. One apprehended and the hunt for the remaining accused is on," he said.
Images released after the operation showed several packets of suspected cannabis recovered during the raid, with police officials documenting the seizure in the presence of witnesses.
Senior police officials said investigations are in progress to determine the origin of the narcotics and identify their intended destination. Authorities are also examining possible interstate and cross-border links while working to identify other members of the trafficking network.
Assam has witnessed an intensified anti-narcotics drive in recent years, with law enforcement agencies carrying out frequent intelligence-based operations to dismantle organised drug syndicates operating across the state.
Successive crackdowns have resulted in the seizure of substantial quantities of heroin, methamphetamine tablets, cannabis and other prohibited substances, along with the arrest of hundreds of alleged drug traffickers.
The state government has consistently maintained that Assam's geographical location, sharing international borders with Bangladesh and Bhutan while serving as the gateway to the Northeast, makes it particularly vulnerable to narcotics trafficking routes connected to the Golden Triangle.
To combat the menace, the government has adopted a zero-tolerance approach that combines strict law enforcement, intelligence-led operations, coordination among multiple agencies, public awareness campaigns and rehabilitation measures for those affected by drug abuse.
Chief Minister Sarma has repeatedly reiterated that the state's crackdown on narcotics networks will continue until organised drug trafficking is effectively eliminated from Assam.
