Chennai, Jun 27: Veteran Tamil filmmaker, actor and screenwriter K Bhagyaraj passed away in Chennai on Saturday after suffering a heart attack. He was 73.

The filmmaker had remained active in public life until recently and had attended actor-politician Khushbu Sundar’s daughter’s wedding in Goa just days before his death.

Born Krishnaswamy Bhagyaraj in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district, he began his film career as an assistant to acclaimed director Bharathiraja before establishing himself as one of Tamil cinema’s most influential filmmaker-writers.

Known for his sharp screenplay writing, realistic characters and socially rooted narratives, Bhagyaraj played a major role in shaping Tamil cinema during the 1980s and 1990s.

During his illustrious career, he directed more than 25 films and acted in over 75 movies. He was widely regarded as one of Tamil cinema’s finest screenwriters, with his films gaining appreciation for their emotional depth, relatable characters and engaging storytelling.

His contribution to cinema was recognised by former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and legendary actor MG Ramachandran (MGR), who had publicly described Bhagyaraj as his successor in the film industry.

Bhagyaraj also made his mark in Hindi cinema with the 1986 film Aakhree Raasta, starring Amitabh Bachchan in a dual role along with Jaya Prada, Sridevi and Anupam Kher. The revenge drama became one of the notable Hindi films of that decade.

The Tamil film industry is mourning the loss of a celebrated creative personality whose films and screenwriting left a lasting impact on generations of movie lovers. Tributes from actors, filmmakers and fans are expected to continue pouring in.
