Fresh 5.6 quake hits Venezuela coast after deadly twin earthquakes

Caracas, Jun 28: An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 struck off the coast of Venezuela, days after twin powerful earthquakes devastated parts of the country, leaving nearly 1,500 people dead and thousands missing.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) detected the latest seismic activity in the waters off Aragua. The earthquake occurred at a depth of around 30 km.

The fresh tremor has added to concerns as rescue operations continue following the major earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24. The region was hit by two powerful quakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude, triggering widespread destruction.

At least 1,430 people have been confirmed dead, while around 51,000 people have been reported missing, according to reports. Rescue teams continue searching through collapsed structures for possible survivors, though authorities have warned that chances of finding survivors reduce significantly after the first 72 hours following an earthquake.

US Department of State spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the United States had quickly activated disaster response measures following the earthquakes in Venezuela.

“By bringing international disaster response programs under the State Department, the US government is able to respond more rapidly and more effectively to disasters. After the earthquakes in Venezuela, the US immediately mobilised, activating urban search and rescue teams and the delivery of humanitarian and medical supplies,” Pigott said.

Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez thanked United Arab Emirates President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for extending condolences to families affected by the tragedy.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva also expressed solidarity with Rodriguez and the people affected by the disaster.

Meanwhile, residents have raised concerns over the organisation of government relief and recovery efforts, with the situation reportedly worsened by mobile network and internet disruptions in several areas.

According to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the June 24 earthquakes caused severe human suffering and affected livelihoods, infrastructure and essential services. A preliminary satellite-based assessment estimated direct physical damage at around USD 6.7 billion, equivalent to nearly 6 per cent of Venezuela’s GDP.

The UNDP noted that while the economic impact is significant, the greatest loss remains the suffering faced by people and communities affected by the disaster.
