New Delhi, Jun 28: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday appealed to citizens to celebrate the upcoming Ganesh Utsav by choosing eco-friendly clay idols crafted by Indian artisans, saying the move would help safeguard the environment while giving a boost to traditional craftsmen under the government's ‘Vocal for Local’ campaign.
Speaking during the 135th edition of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said he had received numerous messages from people requesting him to discuss Ganesh Utsav, despite the festival still being a few months away.

Responding to those requests, PM Modi observed that preparations for the festival begin well in advance, especially for potters and artisans who dedicate months to creating Ganesh idols. He said this was the ideal time to encourage people to support local craftsmanship and adopt environmentally responsible practices.
The Prime Minister urged devotees to ensure that the Ganesh idol installed in their homes, housing societies or community pandals is made from natural clay sourced within the country and handcrafted by Indian potters and artisans. Such a choice, he said, would not only preserve a centuries-old tradition but also provide meaningful support to thousands of families dependent on the craft.
He also appealed directly to idol makers to prioritise clay over synthetic materials and advised buyers to pay attention to both the composition and origin of the idols they purchase. Stressing the harmful impact of Plaster of Paris (PoP) idols, PM Modi urged people to completely avoid buying them.
Highlighting the environmental significance of clay idols, the Prime Minister noted that they dissolve naturally in water after the immersion ceremony, preventing pollution of rivers, ponds and lakes. He said this simple step enables devotees to honour their religious traditions while fulfilling their responsibility towards protecting nature.
PM Modi further said that purchasing idols made by local artisans strengthens India's traditional handicrafts sector and reinforces the spirit of self-reliance envisioned through the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative. He expressed confidence that citizens would keep these considerations in mind during Ganesh Utsav and other festivals, making choices that serve both society and the nation.
Concluding his address, the Prime Minister said the true strength of India lies in the collective efforts of its people. He remarked that countless small initiatives undertaken across the country demonstrate how meaningful transformation becomes possible when determination is matched by public participation and community support.
