Virudhunagar, Jun 30: A case has been registered against the husband of a DMK functionary and two others for allegedly threatening and intimidating Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) MLA A Karthik after he intervened to stop suspected illegal sand mining activity in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district.
The incident took place near Mamsapuram in the Srivilliputhur Assembly constituency represented by Karthik, where residents had raised concerns over alleged sand extraction taking place during night hours.
Following complaints from locals, MLA Karthik visited the spot to inspect the situation and verify the allegations. According to the complaint, the MLA reached the location while the alleged sand mining activity was underway and attempted to stop the operation.

During the intervention, Thangamangani, identified as the husband of Mamsapuram Town Panchayat President Sujitha Mary, who is associated with the DMK, allegedly arrived at the spot along with two others.
Police said the group allegedly confronted the MLA, resulting in a heated argument. The complaint stated that the accused obstructed Karthik while he was performing his public duties, used abusive language and issued threats during the confrontation.
The entire incident was reportedly captured on video.
Based on Karthik’s complaint, police registered a case against the three accused and have started an investigation. Authorities are expected to examine the video footage and record statements as part of the probe.
The incident has brought renewed focus on allegations of illegal sand mining in the region, with residents raising concerns over the influence of those involved and the difficulties in preventing such activities.
Police said further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
