Vasco, Jul 5: Mormugao police have registered a case against a jeweller for allegedly cheating a woman and refusing to return her pledged gold ornaments despite her offering to repay the loan amount along with interest.

According to the complaint lodged by Netra Honavarkar, a resident of Headland-Sada in Mormugao, the accused, Bhimappa Chalwadi, proprietor of PBC Jewellers, had extended loans of Rs 2.7 lakh and Rs 2.2 lakh against gold ornaments valued at approximately Rs 14 lakh.

The complainant alleged that when she approached the jeweller to clear the outstanding loans with the applicable interest and redeem her ornaments, the accused refused to accept the payment. He allegedly informed her that the pledged gold had already been melted, resulting in the loss of her valuables and a breach of trust.

Based on the complaint, Mormugao police have registered an offence under Sections 316(5) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The investigation is being carried out by Police Sub-Inspector Saidatta Naik.
