MNS-BJP spar over BMC corruption, Mumbai infrastructure as political tensions escalate

Daijiworld Media Network - Mumbai

Mumbai, Jul 6: A sharp political confrontation broke out on Monday between the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with both sides trading accusations over alleged corruption in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the state government's handling of infrastructure projects.

The latest flashpoint came after Mumbai BJP president Amit Satam accused the MNS and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) of exploiting the BMC during their years of influence over the civic body. Satam also criticised MNS chief Raj Thackeray, prompting strong reactions from party workers across Maharashtra.

In protest, MNS supporters staged demonstrations in several locations. Near Chembur railway station in Mumbai, party workers expressed their anger by beating an effigy of Amit Satam with footwear.

Senior MNS leader and former MLA Bala Nandgaonkar retaliated by targeting the BJP leadership over the condition of the recently inaugurated Mumbai-Pune Missing Link Expressway. He alleged that the project had been rushed to completion ahead of elections for political gains and questioned the government's accountability after a landslide disrupted traffic on the route.

"The government should not only claim credit for successful projects but also accept responsibility when they fail," Nandgaonkar said, adding that hurried inaugurations without adequate preparedness had exposed commuters to risk.

The MNS also criticised the BJP-led Mahayuti government through its official X account, questioning why the expressway was opened to the public if testing had not been completed. The party referred to statements by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis indicating that testing of the bridge was still underway and asked why this had not been disclosed at the time of its inauguration.

The party further questioned whether sufficient preventive measures had been implemented despite the area's known vulnerability to landslides, arguing that the incident reflected negligence in planning and execution.

Nandgaonkar also called for an immediate audit of trees across Mumbai following recent incidents of trees collapsing during the monsoon. He urged the state government to strengthen pre-monsoon preparedness to prevent similar accidents.

Stepping up his attack on Amit Satam, Nandgaonkar accused the BJP leader of displaying "the arrogance of power" and said previous Mumbai BJP chiefs had maintained greater restraint in public life. He alleged that inexperienced leaders were occupying important positions without displaying the required political maturity.

Demanding Satam's removal as Mumbai BJP president, Nandgaonkar urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Maharashtra BJP president Ravindra Chavan to take immediate action.

Responding to Satam's criticism of Raj Thackeray, the MNS leader warned that political leaders should maintain decorum while attacking opponents. He said the MNS refrains from making disrespectful personal remarks against senior BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and expected similar restraint from the BJP.
