Pinarayi Vijayan visits Wayanad landslide site as death toll rises to five

Wayanad, Jul 9: Senior CPI(M) leader and Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday visited the landslide-hit Kalladi area in Wayanad district and met those injured in the tragedy.

Vijayan, accompanied by senior CPI(M) leaders M V Govindan and M V Jayarajan, inspected the disaster site before visiting a relief camp and later meeting the injured at a hospital. He also enquired with doctors about the condition of those undergoing treatment.

Rain continued to lash the area during the visit.

The death toll in the landslide rose to five on Thursday after rescue teams recovered two more bodies from the site. Three persons are still reported missing.

The landslide occurred on July 7 at the site of the Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel project, which is aimed at improving road connectivity between Wayanad and Kozhikode districts.

According to officials, 10 people were injured in the incident. Of them, three have been discharged from hospital, four are undergoing treatment in stable condition, while three remain in the intensive care unit, including two who are said to be in critical condition.
