Sharjah, Aug 2: The United Arab Emirates has recorded a major medical breakthrough after Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah successfully performed the Middle East's first spinal stabilisation procedure using an advanced titanium implant, further strengthening the country's position as a regional hub for advanced healthcare.
The Emirates Health Services (EHS) said the surgery was carried out using the ROCCIA MultiLIF Titanium implant to treat a patient suffering from severe chronic pain caused by advanced spinal canal stenosis, a condition that compresses spinal nerves, limits mobility and significantly affects quality of life.
According to EHS, the procedure successfully relieved pressure on the spinal nerves while stabilising the spine, enabling faster recovery and reducing the patient's hospital stay compared to conventional surgical methods.

Dr Arif Al Nooryani, CEO and Head of the Cardiac Centre at Al Qassimi Hospital, said the achievement reflects EHS's commitment to adopting globally recognised medical technologies and promoting innovation across its healthcare facilities.
He said the organisation continues to invest in specialised expertise, state-of-the-art equipment and advanced surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes while reinforcing Al Qassimi Hospital's status as a regional referral centre for complex medical procedures.
Dr Fawaz Al Hazzaz, Consultant and Head of the Spine Surgery Department, said the operation involved widening the spinal canal and stabilising the affected vertebrae using the ROCCIA MultiLIF Titanium implant for the first time in the Middle East.
He noted that the implant's advanced design allows greater surgical precision, improves load distribution across the spine, promotes natural bone fusion and reduces the risk of complications or repeat surgeries. The technique also minimises damage to surrounding tissues, helping patients experience less post-operative pain and return to normal activities sooner.
EHS said the landmark procedure forms part of its broader strategy to introduce the latest medical innovations and expand specialised healthcare services in line with international standards, further enhancing the UAE's reputation for advanced medical care.
