New Delhi, Aug 4: Air India flight AI2379 from Phuket to Delhi encountered a turbulence-related incident on Tuesday, causing the aircraft to briefly lose around 300 feet in altitude and leaving at least 12 passengers and crew members with minor injuries.
According to Air India, the aircraft experienced a short spell of turbulence while cruising, resulting in a momentary loss of altitude. Flight tracking platform Flightradar24 reported that the aircraft descended by approximately 300 feet, likely due to turbulence or a sudden updraft or downdraft.
The flight departed Phuket at 8.25 am and landed safely at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport at 11.50 am IST. All passengers and crew members disembarked safely after landing.
In a statement, the airline said there were no serious injuries. However, a small number of passengers and crew members who sustained minor injuries were taken to a medical facility at the airport for precautionary evaluation and treatment by Air India's medical team.
"The safety and well-being of our passengers and crew remain Air India's highest priority. We are providing all necessary support to those affected and are cooperating fully with the relevant authorities as part of the investigation," an Air India spokesperson said.
Visuals from the airport showed some injured passengers being taken in wheelchairs for medical attention. One passenger was seen with bandages covering parts of his face and head, while a cabin crew member was transported wearing a cervical collar, indicating neck-related injuries.
Turbulence is caused by irregular air movement due to factors such as changing wind patterns, weather systems, jet streams or mountainous terrain. Modern aircraft are built to withstand turbulence, but sudden changes in altitude can result in injuries, particularly if passengers or crew are not seated with seat belts fastened.
The incident is under investigation, and Air India said it is extending all necessary assistance to those affected.
