New Delhi, Aug 5: A day after Independent MP Pappu Yadav was allegedly attacked during a press conference at his official residence in Delhi, the accused was released on a personal bond after being questioned by police.

The accused, identified as Sumit, allegedly hurled a slipper at the MP while he was addressing the media on the alleged Ram Mandir offering theft controversy.

Police said the 34-year-old is a resident of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh and works in the iron fabrication business in Ghaziabad. Officials added that he has no previous criminal record.

The incident occurred on Sunday, August 2, when Pappu Yadav was defending the Opposition's protest in Parliament over the alleged Ram Mandir offering theft issue. During the press conference, the accused allegedly threw a slipper at the MP.

Following the incident, Pappu Yadav's supporters overpowered the accused, allegedly assaulted him and later handed him over to the police.

Sources close to the MP claimed that two individuals had entered the venue posing as journalists. They alleged that while one person threw the slipper, another was carrying a knife. However, police have not officially confirmed the presence of a second suspect or the allegation regarding the knife.

Reacting to the incident, Pappu Yadav alleged that the attack was part of a larger conspiracy and accused his political opponents of being behind it.

In posts on X, the MP alleged that the attacker was protected by the BJP and RSS and claimed he would continue to fight against those responsible. He also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to identify those allegedly behind the attack and take appropriate action.

Police said further investigation into the incident is underway.
