New Delhi, Aug 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, August 26, spoke with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed his condolences over the loss of lives in the devastating floods that have battered the neighbouring country.

PM Modi assured Shah of India's full support and offered all possible humanitarian and relief assistance to help Nepal deal with the crisis. A sudden and massive flood swept through two districts bordering Tibet, causing widespread destruction in settlements along the river and affecting several hydropower projects.

In a post on X, Modi said the people of India stood in solidarity with Nepal during the difficult time. He said Indian teams were coordinating closely with Nepalese authorities in rescue and relief operations.

India is also preparing to send relief material to flood-hit areas of Nepal through Indian Air Force aircraft under the government's Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief initiative. The emergency consignment is expected to include medicines, rations and other essential supplies.

The government is also considering deploying National Disaster Response Force personnel to Nepal to assist local authorities with rescue and relief operations.

According to Nepal Tourism Board data, around 384 travellers, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali nationals, were reported missing from the affected areas. At least 133 Indians were among the missing foreign nationals, while 37 non-resident Indians were also reported missing from the Himalayan Glacier Area.

The Indian Embassy in Nepal has issued emergency contact numbers for Indian nationals affected by the floods. The embassy said it was coordinating with Nepalese authorities to facilitate the early rescue and relief of affected Indians.

The emergency numbers are +977 985 131 6807 and +977 970 910 7500, and both can also be contacted through WhatsApp, the embassy said.
