Tehran, Aug 30: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said the peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Iran and the United States is in the interests of Iran, West Asia and the world.
Addressing a ceremony in Tehran, Pezeshkian said implementation of the MoU would prevent the United States and Israel from causing chaos, aggression and insecurity in the region and allow regional countries to pursue stability and development, according to a statement published on his office's website.
Pezeshkian stressed the need to foil the "enemies' sinister plots" by promoting unity and solidarity among Muslim countries, reports Xinhua news agency.
He said Iran had never been the party to start a war and would not welcome conflict, but would firmly resist any aggression.
"We do not welcome war, but will stand strongly against any aggressor, and no power can force a nation that is standing with all its might and will into surrender," he said.
Also on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi warned in a social media post that "major" efforts were underway to manipulate global energy markets for personal gains and prolong the US war against Iran.
Separately, Iran's Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that security forces had dealt a "decisive" blow to a "terrorist" team affiliated with the United States and Israel in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.
The IRGC said one member of the team was killed and six others were arrested.
On February 28, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities. Iran responded with waves of missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and US bases and assets in the region, while tightening its grip on the Strait of Hormuz.
On June 18, the United States and Iran signed the MoU aimed at ending the war in the region on all fronts.
Under the agreement, the two sides were scheduled to hold negotiations within 60 days to reach a final agreement. The deadline ended on August 17, but the fate of the talks remains unclear following an escalation between the two countries last month.
