Los Angeles, Sep 8: Hurricane warnings have been issued for parts of Hawaii as Hurricane Lowell approaches the western Hawaiian Islands, while tropical storm warnings remain in effect for Oahu, according to the US National Weather Service (NWS) and National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Hurricane warnings are in effect for Kauai, Niihau and surrounding waters to the north, south and west, the NWS Honolulu office said.

The centre of Lowell is forecast to pass near or west of Niihau on Monday night and early Tuesday, with hurricane conditions expected in Kauai County from Monday night, the NHC said.

Weather conditions were expected to deteriorate from Monday afternoon. The NHC warned that stronger wind gusts could occur over mountainous areas and on both windward and leeward slopes.

Lowell is also expected to bring significant flash flooding and mudslides, particularly across Kauai County and parts of the Big Island.

The NHC warned that swells generated by the hurricane could result in life-threatening surf and rip-current conditions across several Hawaiian islands over the next few days.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green had signed an emergency proclamation on September 3 covering the entire state to support preparations for and response to potential impacts from Hurricane Lowell, Hurricane Karina, Tropical Storm Marie and any other storms that could affect Hawaii.

The proclamation allows state and county agencies to mobilise personnel, equipment and resources more quickly as Hawaii continues its recovery from Tropical Cyclone Lala.

Last month, Hurricane Lala battered the island state, leaving around 17,000 customers without power for several days. Residents in parts of southern Kau district also faced roads blocked by mud, boulders and fallen trees.

Hawaii police said one death appeared to be related to Lala, while another death may have been storm-related.
