Mumbai, Sep 19: Powai Police on Saturday registered a case of abetment of suicide in connection with the death of a second-year student at the IIT-Bombay campus a day earlier.

Police said the FIR has been registered against multiple persons in connection with the student's death. The student's family has named a few individuals in their complaint.

Meanwhile, fresh protests were held at the IIT-Bombay campus on Saturday morning, with several students continuing their demonstration through the night following the student's death.

The student's parents, who are from Yavatmal, reached the campus on Saturday. They alleged that their son was subjected to caste-based discrimination and "institutional torture", and claimed that he would not have taken the extreme step otherwise.

The student had reportedly been caught carrying a mobile phone during an examination on Friday.

Students alleged that he was threatened with suspension following the incident. However, IIT-Bombay, in a statement issued on Friday night, said no disciplinary action had been initiated against him.

"The matter was also discussed with the student by the instructor and the head of the department, who counselled him and assured him that the incident would not adversely affect his academic career," the institute said.

The mid-semester examinations scheduled for Saturday have been postponed.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the student's death and the allegations made by his family.
