New Delhi, Sep 21: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered a reinvestigation into the Dharmasthala Sowjanya rape and murder case, setting a strict three-month deadline to complete the probe.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which had previously investigated the case, had acquitted the accused. Challenging this, Sowjanya's mother, Kusumavathi Gowda, had approached the high court seeking a reinvestigation. After the high court dismissed her plea, she filed a special leave petition before the Supreme Court.
Earlier in July, the apex court had come down heavily on the CBI, slamming the agency for conducting a "shoddy and non-independent" investigation, before reserving its verdict.
A bench comprising justices Sanjay Kumar and Sanjeev Sachdeva had observed, "In fact, the CBI investigating officer acted as a judge. He reviewed the previously collected evidence and submitted his report. He did not conduct any independent investigation."
The bench had noted that this reflected the poor functioning and work ethic of the CBI before reserving its judgment on the matter.
