Sowjanya case reinvestigation: SIT team holds first meeting in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Oct 2: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted for further investigation into the Sowjanya rape and murder case, which was registered at Beltangady police station 14 years ago, arrived in Mangaluru on Thursday and held its first meeting.

A few days ago, the Supreme Court had directed the state government to conduct a fresh investigation into the case under the leadership of new officers, excluding members of the previous SIT, and submit a report within a stipulated period. Accordingly, an SIT was constituted under the leadership of IGP N Shashikumar.

The SIT members who arrived in the city in the morning, Intelligence Division SP Nisha James and CID SP Lokesh Jagalsar, inspected the newly opened office in the old deputy commissioner's office complex near State Bank in the city. Later, they visited the office of Mangaluru City police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy and held discussions with him.

A portion of the Special Task Force office on the second floor of the deputy commissioner's office has been converted into the SIT office. It is learnt that the work related to the investigation will be carried out from this office.

In the afternoon, SIT chief N Shashikumar visited the SIT office where four senior officers and 16 assistant officers held a meeting. Sources said that, along with reviewing the old case files, a roadmap for the further investigation was prepared and responsibilities for the investigation were assigned to the officers. Another IPS officer in the SIT team, Venkatesh Prasanna, was absent.

Officers of the Special Investigation Team tasked with reinvestigating the Sowjanya case arrived in Beltangady on Thursday and inspected the SIT office located near the police station.

Officers Nisha James and Lokesh Jagalsar visited and inspected the office before leaving for Mangaluru. The office of the earlier SIT team, which had investigated the case involving allegations that a body had been buried in Dharmasthala village, was located at the police quarters near Beltangady police station. It is possible that the SIT team conducting the reinvestigation of the Sowjanya case may also function from the same office.
