Tenkasi, Oct 7: A 28-year-old woman allegedly set her two young sons on fire before dying by suicide in Tamil Nadu's Tenkasi district following an alleged public humiliation by her husband, police said. The two children also died in the incident.

According to police, Mariammal had taken her sons, Kabineswaran, 6, and Rabineswaran, 4, to a nearby temple to attend a traditional dance festival. Her husband, Kalipandi, allegedly arrived at the festival in an inebriated state and slapped her in front of others.

Mariammal subsequently returned home with her two children. Police said she locked the doors, set her sons on fire and then doused herself with kerosene before setting herself ablaze.

Mariammal and both children died in the incident.

Police have registered a case and are questioning Kalipandi. Officials said he was a frequent drinker and that an investigation was underway to determine the circumstances that led to the deaths.
