Chandigarh, Oct 11: A controversy has erupted in Punjab after a photograph of freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh allegedly appeared against a voter’s entry in the electoral rolls of the Ludhiana East Assembly constituency, prompting Congress leaders to demand a thorough investigation into possible discrepancies.
Former Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring raised the issue on Sunday, questioning how a photograph of ‘Shaheed-e-Azam’ Bhagat Singh could reportedly appear against a voter’s name in the electoral rolls.

Warring demanded an impartial investigation by the Election Commission and accountability for those responsible.
In a post on social media platform X, Warring said, “This was the only thing left to see…!”
He claimed that Bhagat Singh’s photograph had allegedly been placed against serial number 422 in the electoral roll for polling booth number 38 in Ludhiana East.
The Congress leader compared the alleged discrepancy with similar cases involving photographs in Haryana’s electoral rolls and questioned the credibility of the electoral process.
He asked the Election Commission how such errors were occurring in voter lists, who would investigate them and who would be held accountable. He also demanded an impartial inquiry and public disclosure of its findings.
Earlier, Congress leader and former Ludhiana East MLA Sanjay Talwar had raised the issue, demanding a review of electoral rolls at all 235 polling booths in the Assembly constituency.
According to Talwar, apart from the entry at serial number 422 at booth number 38, eight other entries allegedly contained incorrect photographs.
Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Jain said he would obtain details from the concerned Electoral Registration Officer and look into the matter.
The reason behind the allegedly incorrect photograph and the extent of the discrepancy can be established only after an official inquiry.
Meanwhile, the Congress has urged the Election Commission to ensure transparency and maintain the accuracy of electoral rolls.
Warring stressed that the accuracy of voter lists and the credibility of the electoral process must not be compromised in a democracy.
