Bantwal, Nov 1: A 55-year-old man, who was critically injured when a car rammed into a stationary motorcycle from behind at Mannapu, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mangaluru.

The deceased has been identified as Gopal, a resident of Kanapade in Navoor village. The accident occurred on October 30.

Gopal was travelling as a pillion rider on a motorcycle driven by Zacharia. The duo was returning home to Kanapade via B C Road and the Belthangady Road after completing their work at a red stone quarry in Ganjimath.

When they reached Mannapu at night, traffic had come to a standstill following another accident at the spot, resulting in a road blockade. Zacharia stopped the motorcycle as the road was blocked. At that moment, a car approaching from behind crashed into the stationary two-wheeler with considerable force, throwing both riders onto the road.

Both men sustained injuries in the impact. Gopal suffered severe injuries to his head, chest, hands, legs and nose, while Zacharia sustained injuries to his face and back.

Local residents rushed the injured men to Bantwal Government Hospital, where they received preliminary treatment. They were subsequently shifted to a private hospital in Mangaluru for further medical attention.

Gopal, whose condition was critical, was admitted to the intensive care unit. However, despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries later that night.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

A case has been registered against the car driver, Afreed, and further investigation is under way.
