Kundapur: Frustrated Locals Destroy Over 150 Trees, DC Furious

Kundapur, Jul 11: Udupi DC Dr M T Reju on Tuesday July 10 took Jadkal gram panchayat to task over the recent felling of trees by angry locals who were miffed with the authorities for not taking action on repairing Shelkod-Mudur road.

The locals, in a fit of rage and frustration, or pehaps instigated by someone else, had on Saturday July 7 night cut down more than 150 trees using mechanized saws, cauding a loss of nearly Rs 50 lac. They were angry over the apathy of the authorities despite their constant demands to repair the roads and undertake development works in the area.

On Tuesday, the DC visited Jadkal-Mudur to examine the spot. After inspecting the trees that were cut down on both the sides of the road from Jadkal Hulipare to Mudur ground, the DC reprimanded the Jadkal gram panchayath president who was present at the spot.

"No one is above law. As per the guidelines of the Wildlife and Forest Protection Act, it is wrong to cut down trees to show your anger against bad roads. The responsibility is to be borne by the gram panchayat. This issue had to be brought to the notice of the district administration, through a memorandum, after discussing it in a meeting with the gram panchayat. It is not possible to clear the trees immediately. The trees won’t be cleared until the culprits surrender. There are other roads in our district that are worse than this. But nowhere has such an unlawful incident taken place. The culprits have to surrender immediately," he thundered.

Reju walked from Jadkal Hulipare to Mudur ground and collected all the details of the number of trees, electric poles and telephone cables that were damaged. Udupi police SP Dr Borelingaiah, Kundapur assistant commissioner B Sadashiva Prabhu, Kundapur forest range officers Sadanand, Ganesh, Byndoor circle inspector Arun B Nayak, Kollur inspector Dejappa, Byndoor tahsildar  Raju Mogaveera and  Mescom officials among others were present.

The locals are tensed as they have no contact with the outside world as the road is completely closed due to blockage by the cut down trees. Tension has raised in them after the visit by DC , as he did not direct the officials to clear the trees off. locals are spending time in darkness as there is no power supply from 3 days. School and college students and patients have been affected very badly.

The order by the DC to bend before the law and that 400 people have to be surrendered has angered that locals. "If you have to arrest, arrest all the 6,000 people, not just 400. You do not feel the pain that we are suffering right now. We have not done any crime. This was to get your notice," said angered locals addressing the DC.

“We know how to cut trees, in the same way, we know to clear them off. If the district administration cannot do it, let them give it in writing, we will carry on with the further works," challenged the locals.

The locals have warned the administration to take necessary steps within four days, failing which they threatened to take law into their hands. Even though Rs 2 crore has been sanctioned for road development, the forest department has put the work on hold. This hinderance in road development is the main reason for the issue to crop up.

We have to respect the law correct? It is easy to comment here but try to understand the poor villagers facing the problems with out proper roads? Where is the Law or law makers gone when sanctioned 2 Crore not utilised to repair the roads.? Now recent years some time to get the right result, it is necessary to do some wrong things. No leader cares about poor people.
Where is the law when forests demolished & trees are stolen, when forest land occupied for illegal mining,Government land given to builders through de-notification?

Udupi DC Mr. Reju, let him explain what action he has taken recently all the trees cut down by the builders in Manipal (when you enter Manipal heights). It is being understood that all this area is Government's land. If so who de-notified this??? Where was Mr. Reju - D.C. of Udupi? Local people occupied with Stalls & Fast foods booths of both the side of Manipal - Alevoor road near MJC College.
When Mr. Ponnuraj was DC in Udupi, he demolished all this stalls. After Mr.Ponnuraj got transfered again people installed the same. But why Mr.Reju is silent on this matter??

Yes, it is completely wrong to cut trees as trees have done no fault!! :( But it is a very good lesson for the state Government. But they should have taken other measures to punish. However, when they come begging for votes they are promissing all that which they can't even deliver. Once they get vote they are kings and we are slaves!! isn't it!! Therefore, think twice before you vote such party!! God save Karnataka State.

I understand the anguish of the villagers because I am also from a village wherein since somany years, the road is not repaired by the grama panchayat. the people at grama panchayat only interested in their belly filling and do politics in politics. though felling trees is not the solution and neither it should have done, then some authorities donot understand mere request for doing the job. Why DC should be furious, why he did not do the survey of the taluka and acted twoards the wllbeing of the people. he should see that no villagers including students, old people, women and children should suffer. if they suffer, then the whole administration should be held responsible. we are a growing nation and the Central government has somany development project for the connectivity of the villages to the mainstream of the national growth and see how the government officials and elected representatives are working for the peoples' good.

Villagers have their every right to show their anger but not cutting grown trees and blocking roads which will lead to another problem during emergency like situation for transportation. Instead they should have taken the Forest Officers and Village Authorities for task for not repairing roads even after several requests. All affected Villagers should dig deep trench around Forest Officials and Village Authorities houses leaving just one connection to enter their house by walk only. Don’t supply fuel to their vehicles and stop supplying even milk products too. And then you see the difference. All of a sudden entire State Force will come to this Village and Vote Beggars will appear again in this Village too

Police, as usual you guys are always late to the spot?????? This is all happens because of our Indian LAW. which is in hand of ministers and currupted police officers and in the hand of R.sena, BD, and other illigal sang seva's . So its better to our Mangalore/Udupi Police , to wear bangles and saari instead of wearing that kaaki.

Dexter, do you support DC? How they can be so irresponsible? They are not bothered about sufferings of the people. If you travel on these roads then you will realise the condition. Pathetic roads. I understand your concerns about trees. It is wrong to cut the trees. Public should have locked all these official's in their office and should have released only if they agree to repair the road. There is a limit to test patience of the people. Those who suffered knows their pain. DC will wake up only when incidents like this happen..

The DC should think the problems of people and then the problems created by them. He is a government servant and he has all the powers to see where the 2 crores have gone and why the road not repaired. The people have all the rights to protest and if they cut the tree they can also plant more trees. But DC cannot cut trees or plant trees.

It is wrong to cut the fully grown up trees, but we can understand the frustration of the people here. I have noticed many villages there are no motorable roads to approach the cities. How these people can survive in case of emergenceis like health problems of elderly and schoolgoing children where all cannot afford to migrate to the cities. Equal importance should be given to the development of the villages also.

dear mr. Seems that locals are fed up with district administration. There is limit for everything. But cutting down trees is wrong. But if you don't do this, authorities won't get up from the sleep. Instead of cutting trees, locals should have locked these officials in their office and should have released them only after they agree to do the work from that right moment.
