Mangalore, Jul 24: In a surprise raid, MCC officials swooped down on street vendors near State Bank and Central Market areas here on Tuesday July 24, for using plastic items with thickness less than 40 microns.

On inspection, the officials found that some of the street vendors use plastic with thickness of 20 microns. While interrogating them on the sources of these plastics, some vendors said that they purchase them from a man who often comes in a bike to sell plastics, while a few said they buy them from a wholesale shop near State Bank.

The officials also carried out raid in the wholesale store and found plastics less than 40 microns. They then warned the shop owner and sealed the shop until further notice.

Speaking to Daijiworld, one of the MCC officials said, apar from seizing plastic items and sealing the shop, the inspectors also collected a fine of Rs 2,650 from the vendors.

The raid was carried out by environment officer Madhu, inspector Sushanth, Santhosh, Yeshwanth Bhat and Basavaraj among others.

The attack on plastic started in
1987. It was based on a misprint
which was corrected in 2006. The
sad part is that nobody seems to
    their information and have
    latched on to false information.
Since 2006 there have been numerous reports done by various governments, Independent laboratories etc comparing the plastic with paper, jute and their effects on the environment. They have clearly indicated that it is not one stage of the material that needs to be seen but the whole life cycle of the product has to be taken into account to determine the best material for the environment. They have time and again shown that plastic is the best material for the environment. The rest being silent killers as some scientists put it. They have over and over again clarified on prevalent myths.

Hence it to be good to read such official documents/reports and getting to know facts instead of basing our understanding on myths. Papers presented by Dr Gerald Scott, Michael Stephans, Dr Telmo Ojeda, Jakubowicz ,
Chiellini. Etc too give a lot of
    information.

What action has MCC taken on illegal constructions in Mangalore City ? Have they demolished any such buildings ? They have allowed the rich / big builders to flourish and this has been going on for decades.

Why not seize and seal the factories that produce materials which are not confirming to standards put forth by regulatory agencies instead of going round shops searching and penalising them. This game of hide and seek will go on till the sub standard producers are there.
