Mangalore: ZP Meeting Focuses on Resolving Water Related Issues

Mangalore, Jul 25: "As Dakshina Kannada is facing less amount of rainfall, ground water is depleting. Hence engineering and irrigation boards should give more importance to solving water related issues," said Dr K N Vijayaprakash, CEO of zilla panchayat at the monthly KDP meeting here on Tuesday Jul 24.

The meeting was presided over by Shailaja Bhat, zilla panchayat president.


Multi-Village Drinking Water Project

Sathyanarayan, executive engineer said that around 42 projects under multi-village drinking water project have been proposed with a budget estimation of Rs 575 crore. In the first stage, a proposal of Rs 254 crore has been prepared and sent to the government for further approval.

Dr Vijayaprakash disregarded the report given by the officials regarding fluoride content in water. "As per the reports submitted by officials, as many as 44 places in the district have fluoride content in water, which is false," he said.


Vented Dams

In the meeting, education and health committee president Ishwar Kateel and social welfare committee president Janardhan Gowda stressed on the construction of vented dams. In response to this, officials said that 219 vented dams are to be constructed during this year out of which 82 dams have been completed, 72 are in progress and 28 yet to start.

Officials of the education department said that out of 4,069 students who appeared for board exams, 1459 students have excelled. A discussion with higher authority was also held so that the students are easily admitted for higher studies.

"For the welfare of children, around 41 associations run in the district," said Dr Vijayaprakash. "In case of orphans, they can be admitted to residential schools located in Belthangady and Kapikad," he said.

Dhanalaxmi Janardhan, vice president, Mohammad Nazeer, Sheik Lathif, NC Seethamma and others were present.

    Mangalore will have a tough time during summer for water. This year there was no proper rain in mangalore. Corporation and panchayats should take proper action so that mangalore wont be affected by scarcity of water.

    We are really happy to see that M'lore is growing technically,but there is a rule that prior to the actual dam construction,they have to record the peak water level in the site for 10 consecutive years.Is that recorded?If not the retaining walls will collapse due to excess lateral water pressure.All the best Zilla panchayath team,Manalore.
