Mangalore: Colleges Deny Reports of Barring Victim Student from Exams

Mangalore, Aug 2: Some of the educational institutions whose students were assaulted by goons in the recent attack on a home stay in Mangalore, have vehemently denied media reports of barring one of the victim students from answering examinations, as reported by a section of the press.

Nidhish S Shetty, Vice Chairman of Shree Devi Education Trust confirmed to daijiworld that one of its students, a victim of the recent brawl, has attended the classes as usual when the college was reopened on Wednesday August 1. He said, “Our college had a vacation and students were under the care of their parents. I don’t see any reason why the management of any institution should punish students who were not at fault."

Dr Devaraj, Principal of SDM College of Business Management has also rubbished media reports based on hearsay. In fact when daijiworld got wind of these rumours on July 31 that a student is barred from writing exams, we immediately contacted Dr Devaraj to ascertain the veracity of the news. Dr Devaraj had not only denied these rumours but also expressed that his institution had supported the students by responding to the strike call given by them to protest against the disgraceful incident.

When we again contacted him on August 1 in the backdrop of media reports Dr Devaraj said that his college would never take such an unsympathetic step on a student who is already traumatized. “It was an ordinary party and I don’t think there is any need to punish the students for what happened at the home stay. When I read the report I sent a world asking the girl to meet me and she came to the college along with her parents to meet me in the evening. She did not want to come to college as she is yet to come to terms with the reprehensible incident and wanted to avoid answering questions. Our exams began on Monday and in the fragile condition of her mental status she said she is unable to answer her exams. But she will come back to college on Monday and we will give her a chance to write the internal exams again”.

Dr Devaraj however says that in the college prospectus it has been clearly mentioned that students should not participate in any private parties without prior permission from the college. The institute had a bitter experience recently when some of its students who had gone to Madikeri for a freshers' party were bashed up and looted by the locals. “But this was an ordinary party and there is no question of debarring her from exams when the student is going through the worst kind of trauma”, Dr Devaraj stated.

The management of School of Social Work, Roshani Nilaya, denied that any of its students was a victim in the home stay incident. “None of our student was part of the recent home stay attack or had anything to do with it”, said Principal of the college Dr Sr Sophhia Fernandes. Sr Sophia also said “it does not mean to say the issue does not concern us. We are greatly saddened by the shameful incident and the attack on students. Whether my college student was a victim or not in this incident is secondary. But our college is in complete solidarity with the student community in their fight for justice and in ensuring that such incidents do not recur”, she stated.

In fact it is now believed that one of the victim’s houses is behind Roshani Nilaya and in the confusion for the Police it became only Roshani Nilaya.

No doubt, the solidarity expressed by the managements of most of these colleges to which the victims belong, has come as a big relief for all those who felt concerned about the future of these students. Support and solidarity for the victims is the need of the hour especially at a time when they must be trying hard to come out of the trauma they have undergone.

I am surprised to read about the attitude of Media which gives false information to the general public. This is a kind of treatment like applying salt to the already existing wound. When the educational institutions/colleges/universities around the region wholeheartedly condemned atrocities on hapless girls and boys and extended solidarity with the students in their protest, how any one of the colleges/institutions bar victim students from exams who are already traumatized. They must support and extend all possible helps to stop once for all this uncivilized, inhumane activities in the name of so called culture.Victims were not at fault at all but may be some lapses might have been happened here and there. It does not mean that those goons must take law in to their hand and bash/thrash/beat those girls and boys. Please don't give any ill treatment to all the victims of home stay incident. If at all any injustice is meted to
them it means you are spoiling their future.Think about that before taking any drastic step.Don't paint any political colour to this.

Please ensure that none of these victims of the brutal and uncalled for attack is in no way undergoes any more harrowing trauma. The need of the hour is full support and good guidance and counselling . Every child goes through such a patch some time or the other in one’s life and this is the time to be fully supportive to them to heal the wounds that were inflicted for no fault of theirs. I know of a boy years ago when had a more or less similar experience, the parents remained fully supportive and today the boy is a shining star in the West. So please you concerned authorities whosoever that may be, handle them kindly with love and understanding.

I don't think educational institution will take punitive measures for those students who are attended party. The party which organised was none of the subject of them(educational/college institution. It is private birthday party. What baffling me is where were the Student union of respective colleges?I don't think ALL COLLEGE STUDENT UNION HAS TOOTH to condemn and get justice to the victimized students of present when we compare yesteryear's.In the past no body ventured to take head on collusion with students for whatever cause/reason may be(Even police also used to avoid direct confrontation with COLLEGE STUDENTS OF YESTERYEAR)

Therefore, students need to wake up and prevent atrocities against students by agents of MORAL POLICING.In the mean time Police of twin districts need to act sternly against those law breakers and impartial while dealing with such cases.ONE OF THE VIDEO CLIPPING OF HOME STAY ATTACK SHOWS THAT POLICE OFFICER ALSO JOINED WITH HJV AND THRASHED STUDENTS!!!!The entire episode need to inquired by independent agency, CBI as it is attack on democracy and constitution.

These students should give their valuable time to Anna and his company instead of wasting life on unwanted activities. Students wake up and join for good cause which is for your future . Support anna.

Moral policing by over-enthusiastic political party workers is nothing more than hooliganism. It is the responsibility of law enforcement agencies, educational institutions and especially parents to check whether such parties held in remote areas by youngsters are a ruse for immoral activities. Police should take immediate action against self-proclaimed law enforcement agencies and investigate the incident impartially. Any punitive action taken by educational institutions against the guilty may not be entirely unjust, since such measures would discourage youngsters from going astray.

Victims should get moral support and strength from the educational institutes, colleagues,& friends. don't let eve teasers in the colleges to tease these victims. Counselling is needed to give to the parents as well to the victims. They need to get backing to gain their confidence, not sympathy at the moments of trauma which will make them weak.

It is high time for the Universities and colleges across the state to have a strong Cell as Students Protection Cell. Like you have in the college Arts Association, Cultural Association etc.
This cell should provide counselling, support to all students who need guidance, support and protection immaterial of their caste, religion & sex.
During 1960s, 1970s all organisations were scarred of Student Organizations as if any injustice happens to students they used come to the streets and protest against atrocities, now it has become vice versa???
