Dubai Demolishes 40 Ugly Buildings, More to Follow

Dubai, Aug 23 (IANS/WAM): At least 40 abandoned buildings have been demolished in Dubai this year by the municipality because they posed a health threat, security risk and distortion of the aesthetic view of the emirate.

Currently, there are at least 368 more buildings to be demolished.

Jabir Ahmed Abdullah, head of the building inspection section at the municipality, said some of the buildings were being used for committing different types of crimes, delinquencies and for harbouring infiltrators and fugitives.

They were dangerous to the environment, public health and caused accumulation of waste and spread of insects and rodents.

The official said they were also being exploited for illegal economic activities, as warehouses for storing unauthorized goods.

Moreover, they acted as obstacles for planning and development of urban areas.
