Mangalore, Aug 28: Kannada Sahithya Parishad president Pundaleeka Halambi has said that the Parishad is carefully watching the move of the government which has given the ‘go ahead’ for introducing English as a medium of instruction from sixth standard in 341 government schools.

In his speech after being felicitated by the DK district Kannada Sahithya Parishad at Sharada Vidyalaya here on Monday August 27, he asserted the importance and need for education through mother tongue and added that the Parishad will not allow English to replace Kannada.

He stated that both the state and the central government have not been following the scientific language policy, and this raises a suspicion that the government is in favour of privatization of education. He feared that in case education is privatized, people in the downtrodden society will miss out from education. He said that the people falling prey to ‘English medium’ as their priority is a kind of ‘epidemic disease’ and added for the flow of knowledge, teaching in Kannada is the only option.

Speaking on the future plans of the Parishad, he said that women representatives will be welcomed and that religious minority people will also be given places to excel in the literary field. He assured that amendments will be made in the election procedures with regard to the election for the post of taluk panchayath president so that they can be elected only once in his or her lifetime. As demands were raised in various corners that the Akhila Bharatha Sahithya Sammelan need not be held every year, rather other programmes related to Kannada language and literature could be held, he said such demands will be considered. He said that the Kannada Sahithya Parishad will be a secular institution.

Padmashree Dr B M Hegde who inaugurated the programme by lighting the lamp said,”Those 250 years of our slavery with the English people has still not gone from the minds of people.” He also stated that the medium of instruction in one’s own mother tongue is scientifically proven to be good for one’s intellectual enhancement. He also believed that three languages across the globe viz Sanskrit, German, Kannada are rich in their inscription.

DK district Kannada Sahithya Parishad president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura presided over the function. M B Puranik, Krishnaprasad Madthila and P B Harish Rai were present among the others.

Stupid concept & cheap mentality. please don't try to take current generation to 50 years back. Every one should try to educate their children in English. Mr. Halambi take retirement and stay at home, don't spoil other children's carrier.

one who opposes the ones choice to study in his desired language, he opposes the education which is the fundamental right that person must be behind bars and should not be allowed to preach. i am pursuing my ph.d in education and i dont find any literature to do my research in Kannada so what shall i do give it up or go ahead coz the matter is available in English. so many when they reach college are struggling to cope up coz of language barrier. so many beg me to teach them so English before they go for an interview or get into job. what are theses fools preaching just to hold the post they are sitting on. after all who sends the children to school the parents so its their right and choice. will this man send his grand children to Kannada medium because i tell him so. if at all someone has to follow what he says then let him bear up all the expenses of education. what right he has to tell someone to send his child to Kannada medium. i agree that we kannadigas must learn to read, write and talk Kannada that's much enough more then that never must be forced that's the fundamental violation on ones fundamental right. why cant these rouges see the larger picture of the difficulty.

MOTHER TONGUE... He is right.. But don't impose it on Non Kannadigas.... There are many in Karnataka whose 'mother tongue' is not kannada. Tulu, Kodava, konkanni... just to name a few. If they desire to pursue their studies in English it is their basic HUMAN RIGHT..!!

well nice to hear tht people need to learn Kannada. but targeting english medium schools is foolish. English is the international language crossing every border of the countries round the world. If microsoft starts to write programs in kannada then probably it will be helpful to study in a kannada medium or else we listen to these we will be left with out any employment or standing in the internatiional arena. so please grow up. British havent forced us to learn english atleast now after years of independence. its we that have chosen to educate ourselves in english. dnt simply blow the issue out of proportion for ur own personal gains.

What is wrong in shifting to egnlish medium from sixth onwards...!!! let them have Kannada as a compulsory subject. After all it is important that everybody has to learn Kannada...and if they learn other subjects in English what Kannada is going to lose..!!???
