Mallorca End Top of Primera Liga

Madrid, Sep 2 (IANS): Real Mallorca moved to the top of the Primera Liga football on goal difference Saturday night, thanks to a 1-0 win at home to Real Sociedad.

Victor Casadesus' header after 75 minutes gave Joaquin Caparros' side a hard-fought win against Real Sociedad, who paid for an overly defensive attitude and have now gone 11 games without an away win, reports Xinhua.

Although FC Barcelona, Rayo Vallecano and Valladolid could all overtake Mallorca Sunday, the result is a boost for a team that spent much of last season battling against relegation.

Elsewhere Deportivo la Coruna remain unbeaten on their return to the Primera Liga after a 1-1 draw at home to Getafe.

Deportivo opened the scoring after a fine left foot shot from Riki after just six minutes. Twenty minutes later in an entertaining match Getafe youngster Abdel Barrada levelled the scores.

Both teams had options to add to the score, but some wayward passing in the final meters meant the game ended 1-1.

Celta Vigo got the day under way with their first points of season, thanks to a 2-0 home win against Osasuna.

Iago Aspes opened the scoring midway through the second half, while Mario Bermejo sealed the points in injury time.

Celta were the better side and deserved the win against a rival that offered very little in attack and has lost their first three matches of the campaign.

Ignacio Camacho completed a good week for Malaga.

The side qualified for the lucrative group stage of the Champions League in midweek and celebrated Saturday with a 1-0 win away to a Zaragoza side that has now lost both its home matches this season.
