Apologetic Adriano Receives Warning

Rio de Janeiro, Sep 5 (IANS): Troubled striker Adriano has been forced to make a public apology after missing a compulsory training session just two weeks after signing a new contract with Brazilian football club Flamengo.

The 30-year-old was officially warned by Flamengo officials amid reports of his absence followed an all-night party at his home here Sunday evening, reports Xinhua.

Hours before he was due to train with teammates Monday, the former Brazil international striker was also reportedly involved in a minor traffic accident with a motorcyclist.

"I didn't participate in training on Monday and I will be punished," Adriano said Tuesday.

"I apologised to the group and now I want to apologise to the fans."

Flamengo football director Zinho described Adriano's actions as unacceptable.

"He has caused these problems for himself but his actions have impacted others," a furious Zinho said.

"My feeling is one of disappointment. The episode wasn't bad news, it was terrible news."

The warning is Adriano's second since his return to the club following his recovery from Achilles tendon surgery last month.

It is believed one more misdemeanour will lead to the former Inter Milan and Roma forward's sacking.

Adriano has been involved in off-field controversies in recent years amid reports of heavy drinking, alleged links with Rio drug lords and weight problems.

He was released by Brazil's Corinthians in March after allegedly missing 67 physiotherapy sessions during his recovery from injury.
