PM Fails to Resolve Cauvery Water-sharing Row Between TN, Karnataka

New Delhi, Sep 19 (PTI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's efforts to resolve the Cauvery water-sharing row between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka failed today with both states refusing to accept the ruling and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa declaring that the state would move the Supreme Court seeking justice.

After hearing both sides, Singh ruled that Karnataka release 9000 cusecs of water each day for 25 days from tomorrow to October 15 after the state refused to accept Tamil Nadu’s demand for 2 million tmcft water for 24 days or 1 million tmcft for 30 days.

"Karnataka was not agreeable to both these demands and said that it would not release even a drop of water to Tamil Nadu in these circumstances. The bare minimum water sought by Tamil Nadu was also not accepted," Jayalalithaa told reporters after the meeting.

She said Tamil Nadu was "totally disappointed" with the meeting and that the state has no option but to knock at the doors of the Supreme Court to seek justice and to save the standing samba crops.

"Since there was no consensus in the meeting, the Prime Minister as the chair awarded that 9000 cusecs of water be released to Tamil Nadu  from September 30 to October 15. This also was not acceptable to Karnataka. I also registered my protest against this ruling," she said.

Jayalalithaa said Karnataka was "adamant" in its stand by maintaining from the beginning of the meeting that it would not release even a drop of water to Tamil Nadu.

She said Tamil Nadu was dependent on water from Karnataka to save crops in 15 lakh acres in the state.

Earlier, at the meeting, Jayalalithaa told Singh that the people of Tamil Nadu expect "positive and firm" action on his part for the release of water from Karnataka. "I request you to direct Karnataka to immediately release 48 TMC ft at the rate of 2 TMC FT of water everyday for the next 24 days which is due to Tamil Nadu in accordance with the distress-sharing formula and thereafter continuously as per the interim order of the Tribunal, so that the Samba crop can be sustained in the Cauvery basin and food crisis in Tamil Nadu averted," she said.

Noting that Cauvery river is the lifeline of Tamil Nadu which contributes to about 45 per cent of the total surface flows of the state, Jayalalithaa accused Karnataka of not respecting the orders of the Supreme Court.

She also demanded that in this meeting itself the distress-sharing formula should be approved and the water already due to the state should be ordered to be released forthwith.

Well said Mr. Sachidanand Shetty. Tamil Nadu must preserve the water with one more dam. But for that they have to sacrifice fertile land and looking for water from Karnataka dam. This natural resource from God should be shared between two states without any prejudice. Else God may not give enough rain to us. Let's help each other to get more from God.

Prasheesh K Mumbai is right. People outside Karnataka are not at all aware of the grave injustice done by British rulers to Mysore Princely state. Even journalists of other language who are in this field since 25-30 years are also not aware of Karnataka's real problem. For this we have to blame only Karnataka govt & Kannada Journalists who never gave proper picture to their colleagues from other languages.
In the water that is flowing in Cauvery River, 60% is contributed by Karnataka's rain and tributaries,as against which Karnataka is allotted only 40% of total water available in cauvery and Tamil Nadu contributes only 35% but gets back share of 60% while Kerala contributes 5% but gets Nil share. How many People outside karnataka know this fact ? only because Karnataka is upper riparian state and TN is lower riparian state every one is thinking that karnataka is doing injustice to TN.

Caveri Dispute started in 1972 after the expiry of agreement of 1924 between British Rulers and Mysore Maharaja. Since 1972 Karnataka is always projected as villain in National Media and Delhi Political circle only because of very Poor PRO exercise by Karnataka Govt. No one outside Karnataka knows about the grave injustice done to Mysore by British rulers in 1892 & 1924.
Most of the Reporters in News Agency-PTI & English media at National level are Tamilian journalists, who have always taken care to show TN in better light and paint karnataka black. The Editor of famous Gujarati newspaper SANDESH was Shocked when we provided him with documentary proof of grave injustice done to Karnataka (old Mysore) by British, and then he only explained why Karnataka is not getting sympathy it really deserves in National media & Political circle inpite of such horrible injustice done to it, that is lack of proper PRO in the National Media and not able to plant "Paid News" in favour of Karnataka just like Tamil Journalists do.

It is national News Media like PTI infested by Tamilians, which is furnishing news to Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, and all other Vernaculars of the country. And these vernacular media thinks that whatever news furnished by Apex News Agency of the country like PTI must be genuine and they print it. This way karnataka is losing to TN in PR exercise. Kannada organizations taking to the streets and holding Bandhs and Road blocks has only spoiled our image further instead of helping to convince the decision makers & national Media. So, atleast now onwards Kannada journalists should convince national media about grave injustice done by British to Mysore and plant news atleast in Hindi, Gujarati & Marathi media favouring Karnataka.

Tamil Nadu wants water accordance with the terms of the agreements of 1892 and 1924, which are a century year old and in favor of Tamil Naadu because that time TN was under British Presidency.

When everybody knows that our PM is not a sharp shooter for any problem solving then why did he was involved in Cauvery Water Sharing Dispute? Why can’t Tamil Nadu construct one more dam down below the Cauvery River so that they preserve the excess water flowing from Karnataka Dam? Are we so adamant to stop natural flow of Cauvery River Water to downwards Tamil Nadu? Entire Tamil Nadu has only one main river to survive? Is it politically motivated move from both States?

There was draught in Karnataka and shortage of water even when DMK was in power, but Karunanidhi was kind enough to understand the problem of Karnataka and solved the problem amicably. But this Amma never understood the problem of Karnataka even though she is born & brought up in Karnataka, that too in same Kavery basin. Of course she is burdened with a psychological pressure to prove that she is a Tamilian and not Kannadathi to the voters of TN. This "Alien Feeling" (Parakeeya Manobhava) is making her behave impractical. Moreover the most foolish deception perpetrated by British Rulers in 1921 & 1932 is in Tamilnadu's favour. The blunder of British is being perpetuated in independent India also.

The Supreme court ask PMO to respond the plea of TN government and find a solution. When PM try to solve the problem the CM of Karnataka makes a walk out and Jaya appeal to SC court again. Where is the question of blaming the PM irrespective of what party he belong.

Rakesh shetty, mangalore,Mahendra shetty, do you read the article and comment or copy paste a comment from your desktop?. See the article and read it and then see what PM says and then what shettar says and why Jaya cries and then comment. The BJP is against resolving every issue and its only agenda is to protest every point raised by UPA. The NDA wanted to bring FDI but failed due to lack of time and now the same NDA is opposing it.The people of India are not fools all the time.

They are reading and watching what the UPA is doing and where NDA is protesting. The SP and BSP is also party of 95% hindu votes and they too believe in Lord Rama and they are ready to support UPA for all issues then why the BJP is opposing every where.

In 1931 the British forced Mysore Maharaja to sign on dotted lines because at that time Mysore was princely state but Madras Presidency was directly under British Rule. So they wanted to favour their own presidency at the cost of Mysore state. Same Madras presidency is now called Tamil Nadu. Coorg was Separate at that time. But after Independence the contribution of water by Coorg (Kodagu) & Kerala to Kaveri (not Cauvery) was was not considered by Tribunal and the merger of Kodagu in Karnataka and its share of water is not added to the share of Mysore. Hence this anomaly and resultant dispute. We keep on discarding many bad things set by British or rectify the same. But unfortunately Central Govt, Tribunal & even S.Court is justifying the grave partiality done by British. Jayalalitha wants to prove that she is more Loyol to Tamil Nadu then Tamilians themselves because she is from Karnataka and has to prove that she is not sympathetic to Ktk.

It is not PM fails resolve but Karnaakta fails to abide PM's decisions or given solutions.

My personal input is river has to be shared. Water has to flow. Natural resouces does not belong to any human beings. I think, soon Supreme court and centre will take control of all rivers - Karnaktaka will not have any say....

When the cavery river tribunal gave its verdict both the states have not agreed and the case is still pending in the supreme court. We boost ourselves as Indians and that too Peceful Indians, where in we have traded the worst language and abuses in the internet with each other virtually India was divided in to two nations as Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Both the states Politicians have no patience and time to sit together and talk to each other for water sharing to our own brothern. Both the states population has been increased and both the states have increased agriculture culutivating land. Then why not sit and solve the problem. For each and everything supreme court.

There was a strike condemning Cauvery tribunal verdict at Vidhana soudha. The strikers told only blood will flow and water will not flow to Tamil Nadu.
The Police transported all of them to 9 miles far away and ped there. While returning back there was scuffle in-between police and stickers. Strikers told why you have ped us here, all our vehicles are at vidhana soudha, us back once again.
The police replied, Just now you were telling only blood will flow to Tamil Nadu let us see how much blood you have walk back to vidhana soudha and collect your vehicles.

The whole world should restrict rain water from going to the sea with methods like water-harvestings, bunds, pits, tanks, wells, canals, channels, aqua ducts, planting saplings etc.
In future all the rivers of the world should be under one universal world commission. The nations and the states of the world should accept the decisions of the world commission.
If such commission is not created, there definitely going to be wars on water. The state and the nation under their political control cannot take rational and just decisions.
The concept of unity in diversity was used "in non-Western cultures such as indigenous peoples in North America and Taoist societies in 400-500 B.C. Unity in diversity is the highest possible attainment of a civilization, a testimony to the most noble possibilities of the human race. This attainment is made possible through passionate concern for choice, in an atmosphere of social trust.
