Mangalore, Sep 27:
The tourism department and the district administration jointly organized world tourism day at the senate hall of Hotel Gateway here on Thursday September 27.

Inaugurating the programme, deputy commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda said that there is need to promote tourism in Dakshina Kannada on the lines of Goa and Kerala. Admitting that majority of the places in DK district lack basic facilities, he said visitors to holy places could be attracted to other tourist spots too.

"This year approximately 90 lac devotees visited Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala, 45 lac Subrahmanya Kshetra, 15 lac Shree Kshetra Kateel and 14 lac Kadri Temple. In the year 2011-12, as many as 11 lac people landed in the district through Mangalore Airport, out of which 25 percent were from outside the country.

The DC also pointed out that as in any other part of the world, hoteliers in the district too should follow the practice of placing brochures on tourists spots at their entrance desks.

"Improvement in tourism sector also strengthens the district economically," he added.

MUDA commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde presenting his talk on ‘Rules for obtaining permission to run home stays’ said that home stays are aimed at improving the tourism sector. "However, there are conditions, like the owner of the home stay should be staying in the same building where he or she lets out the rooms, and a clearance certificate from the local police is a pre-requisite, among others."

An owner of a home stay in the outskirts of the city, Suresh Mathias said that way back in 2008, he struggled to get a license for home stay as the department concerned put a condition that at least five applications for home stays are required to grant license. The DC guided him to bring such impediments to the notice of the assistant director of tourism department in the district.

Mayor Gulzar Banu presided. MCC commissioner Harish Kumar, Mohammed Ameen, president of KCCI, Peter Nirmal, MD of Hotel Gateway among others were present.

Two days after the Homestay attack in Mangalore, the HJV leader Jagadish Karanth had called a press meet for defendng the gundaism of HJV goons, where Karanth told that SEX Tourism is thriving in Mangalore.
This has spoiled the name of Mangalore all over India as well as in Gulf countries too.
So, now how to salvage this grave damage and wipe out this disrepute of Sex tourism ?

Good Idea but how....?? All of you drink BOOST....

    1. Just travel around and see whether any basic problems pending ?
    2. Widening the NH is a necessity... But the disappearance of Place Name Boards became a calamity....
    3. State Govt is dead.... OK. Veerappa Moily regularly goes via Gurupur to his native...Moodabidri. He was minister, Chief Minister and now Central Minister.... Of course Gurupur road is wide enough for his car and caravan to move... Let the common people go to hell... who cares... He is busy in thinking about the RIGHT TIME of announcing MANGALORE AIRPORT as INTERNATIONAL AIR PORT....!!!!
    4. Instead of Putting NO-PARK boards, MARK & PUT PARKING AREA boards... Automatically People will not park if area is not marked... People want to know where are Parking Area available first...
    5. Please recruit Traffic advisors not Inspectors...

The Mangalore mentality has not changed and are still in the medieval ages. They talk about Indian culture but do not shy away from watching the same programmes on TV.These same do not understand that India has more than 3000 different cultures and we have to adjust ourselves to the growing change.

Overall mindset of Mangalore is not like that in Goa although the same people do not miss their TV shows. They enjoy watching TV and their serials without fail. This is hyprocracy.

When the mindset is such do not think of boosting tourism as it will create a law and order situation. The minds of our Cops are just the same. The DC /CoP /SP etc may always have /get security but what about the common man / youngsters / college students in Mangalore ?

I am not sure if one of you had ever had a chance to walk in any street in Mangalore where is no foot path for pedastrians to walk or run away from flowing traffic in a given traffic signal.

I admire people of Mangalore for taking risk to walk on streets.

Societal Web, Dubai, your list of ten items very relvant and realty in tyhe District. These are ideas to encourage tourism and send away those may have accidently landed in the District.

Hope that DC will look into specific details in order to minimize inconvinance to tourists so that they get to know the place well and complete their planned visits with positive feedback to others who are planning to visit the district.

DC may be requested to take a walk around the city to see possible impedements to fellow citizens and tourists.

I cannot measure the height of ignorance of these people who like to waste time and public funds without achieving anything in this direction.

Am equally surprised by the DC's ignorance about the poor state of infrastructure in coastal areas which are not at all helpful for trade and commerce, tourism and any other economic activity.

Good idea - may be we can encourage tourism by:
    1. Increase the decibel on every horn we use in our vehicles.
    2. Increase the number of people who relieve themselves on the roadside.
    3. Increase the number of garbage dumps.
    4. Increase the number of pot-holes and dug up areas on the roads.
    5. Increase the number of orange flags and nude posters on the road-side walls.
    6. Spit more in every direction at least 10 times a day when you are outside without even looking at who is next to you. Added to this it is better if you are chewing paan.
    7. Pick your nose in public places.
    8. Talk on the phone as if the person on the other side is hard of hearing.
    9. Carry at least two cell phones if you cannot read English.
    10. Eat from a road side vendor and throw the waste right on the road so that at least we know where the road side is during night time.

I think that should do it.

Just a few days ago I read an article on Daiji on the menace of public use of urination taking place around Mangalore,as well as the daily news of road accidents/deaths taking place

Priority should be given first to Public sanitation, garbage disposal, Proper foothpath, pothole free roads etc. Once this is implemented , then we can go in for tourism boost.

We say advancement but lack even BASIC faciltities/infrastructure.
When these basic facilities are absent, how can you boost tourism?

PLEASE STOP DAY DREAMING AND SHOOTING YOURSELF IN THE FOOT!!

This was about world tourism day, not India or DK tourism day.
The Government and it's tourism minister has been talking, giving speeches etc. every year, funds are allocated but it only fills his pockets, nothing given to development of seasides or other infra-structure needed for promoting tourism.
Why at all have such meetings.
At least allow some private interested parties to promote tourism. So many are interested, so many have very good ideas.
Only they need is "No interference from the Ministers and their goondas" guarantee from the Government.
Set the guidelines in the beginning itself and for a set period of time.
So as, anyone taking up the venture knows, how long he can run his business.

Boosting tourism in district is a good move. But in order to boost all the infrastructures required for the said purpose must be improved first.Under the present condition simply highlighting mere numbers of tourists visited does not serve the purpose. As some of the commentators aired their opinions concerned departments/authorities must think about improving roads, facilities in hotels, restaurants, home stay, tourist places, transport systems, beaches, holy places, safety of tourists.Nothing is impossible.Everything is possible provided concerned department/authorities must evince an interest. If they show any sign of interest Mangalore can be better place than any other places.God sake under the present pathetic/horrible condition of the region please don't even think about dreaming. Before all these has to happen put all those miscreants involved in attacks, robbing, murdering must be eliminated first or put under bar.Because of them now reputation of Udipi/Mangalore has completed been spoiled. It is very difficult to bring back that lost fame and name of Mangalore/Udipi Districts.Wish concerned department/authorities will work on it and bring back the glory of Mangalore/Udipi which used to be before.Mangalore/Udipi is good place/destination to promote tourism in the region.Jai Ho Mangalore/Udipi.Sacred place, lovely place and peace loving people.Only those antinational people/elements damaged the reputation due to their selfsih attitude.

Thousands of people die every year by accidents and none of the DC’s in our country are interested in doing the required job. What tourism you are talking about, when the roads are so bad everywhere.
