Mangaluru, July 18: The body of a daily wage labourer who was swept away in a canal near Pilaru while returning home during heavy rain has been found in a stream at Uchila in Someshwara on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as Keshav Shetty (64), a resident of Kumpala Ashraya Colony in Someshwara village.

On the evening of Wednesday, July 16, Keshav was reportedly returning home via the Pilaru road when he attempted to cross an overflowing stormwater canal using a narrow culvert. Amid continuous downpour, he lost balance and was swept away in the strong currents.

Despite an intensive search by family members and locals along the canal, Keshav could not be traced on Wednesday night. Only his umbrella was found in the canal. The family had registered a missing person’s complaint at Ullal police station the same evening.

On Thursday, July 17 afternoon, Keshav’s body was found in the stream near Uchila. Ullal tahsildar, police personnel, and fire service officials visited the spot, retrieved the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination.

Keshav Shetty is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter.
