Mumbai, Oct 7 (IANS): In what appears to be a veiled defence of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram Saturday said "transactions between private individuals cannot be questioned on the basis of an implied act of corruption".

"I'm not aware of the rightness or wrongness of these allegations. Transactions between two private individuals cannot be questioned on the basis of certain imputed or implied act of corruption," he said when asked by reporters whether the government would probe the allegations against businessman Vadra in some realty deals.

However, Chidambaram said that from the information he had gathered, the transactions had been disclosed in the appropriate income-tax and other returns.

Chidambaram was on his first visit to Mumbai after taking over as the union finance minister.

He met top officials from the financial sector on the government's second round of economic reforms.

India Against Corruption's Arvind Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan had Friday alleged that realty major DLF had favoured Vadra in some property deals.

Vadra, the Congress party and DLF have rejected the allegations.
