Mangalore, Oct 23: Ayudha Puja was offered in the city on Tuesday October 23 with great devotion and vigour, marking the ninth day of Navaratri.

People took a day off from work and thanked the lord for helping them fulfil their duties with the help of vehicles, tools and equipment.

Machinery, vehicles, equipment and tools are cleaned, painted decorated with flowers and worshipped. Priests visit various places offering pujas. Goddesses Saraswati, Lakshmi and Parvati are worshipped on this day.

Equipment like computers, cameras, agricultural tools and virtually everything that one uses to earn one's livelihood is blessed and worshipped on this day.

The custom of Ayudha Puja traces its origin to the times when royals worshipped their weapons before a war on Vijaya Dashami, the tenth day of Navaratri. The ninth day of Navaratri is also celebrated as Navami Puja in north India.

It is also said that after annihilating the demons in nine days, Goddess Durga kept aside her weapons, as their work was over, and worshipped them. Legend has it that Arjuna took down the weapons hid by Pandavas in a tree before moving on their mandated period of exile, after the completion of this period, on this day, and worshipped them before starting to use them.

Ayudha Puja is performed not only as a thanksgiving, but also to ward off any evil that may cause harm or injury during the coming year. The day is celebrated by bursting crackers. It is a day of rest for both man and machine.

    Tony Pinto, Mumbai - Dubai.
    You are a true indian.

Sanskrit is one of the oldest languages known for over thousands of years, Sanskrit literature is the richest literature in the history of humankind. The composition of hymns, poems, puranas during the Vedic period formed sacred scripts of Hindus. The oldest known texts in Sanskrit are the Rigveda, Sama-veda, Yajur-veda and the Atharva-veda. Classical Sanskrit based on the old Vedic speech came up approximately between 500 B.C.-1000 A.D. It was the period after which Panini composed his grammar of Sanskrit. The two great epics of this period were Ramayana and Mahabharata.

While it might be considered a forgotten language in India, globally Sanskrit has found many takers. The American Sanskrit Institute was founded 18 years ago with a vision to spread “the ease and joy of learning Sanskrit through an immersion experience, the enjoyment of making the sounds, fluently reading the original Devanagari script, and directly reading, chanting and understanding sacred literature.”The Indological department, University of Bonn Germany conducts various courses and study programs.

While the world is waking up to Sanskrit – the divine language, where are we in terms of preserving the world’s oldest known tongue.

It is a great tradition to bless machinery, tools, weapons, motor cars etc. on this day. This is not an exclusive rite among certain sections of the society but also among other segments too. I was indeed very pleased to have my car blessed by our Parish Priest Father Valerian D'Souza at The Milagris Church last evening. Father Valerian not only blessed the vehicle but also the drivers driving their vehicles.

I Salute you Sir! Very well said! You are the true son of the soil. We may follow many religions, but we should never forget our roots and respect 'sanAthana dharma', which is just the puristic, true, peaceful way of life and not to be labeled as a 'religion'.

    Namaste,

This is a sacred time in India, a period known as Dusshera, a time that celebrates the triumph of good over evil and central to which is the goddess as divine emissary. Essential to Dusshera is the festival of Navaratri, “Nava” meaning nine and “ratri” meaning night. These nine nights honor the Mother Goddess in all her manifestations, including Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati who are symbols of power, wealth and knowledge respectively. Each goddess is worshiped for three days in turn, starting with Durga who destroys negative tendencies, then Lakshmi, who bestows good virtues and fortune, and finally, Saraswati, who instills wisdom and spiritual knowledge. The worship, accompanied by fasting, takes place in the mornings. Evenings are for feasting and, in some communities, dancing. On the 10th day, (“das” means ten), the victory is celebrated, which is why it is also known as vijayadasami: “vijaya” means victory, “dasami” means 10th day
