Karnataka Woman Dies After Being Refused Abortion in Ireland

London, Nov 14 (PTI): A 31-year-old Indian woman died in Ireland from blood poisoning after doctors allegedly refused to perform an abortion stating "this is a Catholic country".

Irish authorities have launched a probe into the death of Savita Halappanavar, a dentist, who was 17 weeks pregnant and suffering a miscarriage and septicaemia at University Hospital Galway last month, The Irish Times reported today.

Her husband, Praveen Halappanavar, an engineer at Boston Scientific in Galway, said that she asked several times over a three-day period that the pregnancy be terminated.

Praveen said having been told she was miscarrying, and after one day in severe pain, Savita asked for a medical termination.

This was refused, he says, because the foetal heartbeat was still present and they were told, "this is a Catholic country".

The dead foetus was later removed and Savita was taken to the high dependency unit and then the intensive care unit, where she died of septicaemia on October 28.

An autopsy carried out two days later found she died of septicaemia "documented ante-mortem" and E.coli ESBL. A hospital spokesperson confirmed the Health Service Executive had begun an investigation while the hospital had also instigated an internal investigation.

Abortion is illegal in the Republic of Ireland.

my simpathy to the family who lost their dear one.word of god says we have to abide by the laws of that country where you dwell in.in india uneducated people also care much abt a pregnant lady so in this case the doctors would have taken much care and reported to the higher authority to save the mothers life or adviced the couple to travel to other country or they would have just returned to india for some time and the precious life would have been saved.i just pray that every doctors in the world will perform their duty with love and fear of god and a respect to their carrier that they chose and remember their zeal taht they had when they decided to b a doctor.lost life can not b brought back by any law or by any doctor but much care and responsibility of any patient can b taken by the hospitals .let us all trust in the lord and pray for the peace for this family and pray that every country respect its pupil and works for the better of them.

@Mr Denis Cutinha, Please refer to the eight amendment , constitution of ireland (1983)with emphasis on the clause 'with due regard to the equal right to life of the mother'. Please wait for the enquiry and any court case to be concludedthis is a case of medical negligence in a case of 'missed abortion'. So, i am saying that the particular doctors have not exercised the special circumstances given in irish law to conduct a termination..it is now a question of law and its interpretation in this case-, not faith, (this much you would agree.)..lets wait and see..sad story but..

No doubt a precious life is lost. May be it was ignorance of doctors or the law of the land. There was negligence which could have been avoided. But why our government is making so much hue & cry about it. BJP and other opposition parties are shedding some crocodile tears to score a few political points out of this tragedy. They are forgetting our country has the highest maternal death in the world as per UN report dated May 2012. Going by report about 56,000 maternal deaths occur in India every year due to many factors like negligence, malnutrition, poor hygene of govt hospitals, adultrated medicines etc. India and Nigeria together accounted for a third of the deaths of pregnant women globally in 2010.

I agree with A. Prabhu, Kadri. Law should not be followed for saving any life. I was reading a lot of articles on this. Unfortunate it is turning religious. My full sympathies to this family.

But interestingly Ireland as per WHO is one of the safest for mothers. The World Health Organization (WHO) in its most recent report on global maternal death rates found that only 3 out of every 100,000 women died in childbirth in Ireland. Compare this with an average of 14 in Europe and North America, 190 in Asia and 590 in Africa. Thus, Ireland is one of the safest nation in the world to be pregnant, which speaks commendably for its mother's health care system.
The Galway Hospital is not a 'Catholic' medical facility, in that it is not run or owned by any official Catholic Order or even affiliated to any Christian church. It is managed, along with several other hospitals in the region, by a management team put in place by the government's Health Services utive.
Many Indians are in the Gulf or Islamic states, where they dutifully follow laws and there seems to be little outcry for their basic human or religious rights, if violated.
In India every year, a minimum of 11 million babies are 'murdered', many cases of female infanticide. In the 5 year period preceding 2012, it is estimated that around 25 lakh legal Indian abortions took place. At the time the Indian Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act (MTPA) in its present form came into being in 1972, there were only 25,000 cases reported. Thus, the culture of death by choice tends to become all pervasive, even in India, where it is lawful to abort with restrictions. Given the fact, that there is much abuse of the abortion practice, there is a need to amend MTPA and make it reflective of Indian culture and protect the unborn girl child.

The WHO identifies Ireland as an "unusually safe place to be pregnant." It further gives some very startling statistics that reveal the bright side of pregnancy health care in Ireland as compared with other places (including where abortion is legally practiced):

    Maternal Death Rates:

    Ireland: 3 in 100,000
    Europe: 14 in 100,000
    North America: 14 in 100,000
    Asia: 190 in 100,000
    Africa: 590 in 100,000

Those figures speak louder than many arguments.

Definitely laws in Ireland must be amended to a better reality so that these things do not reoccur again. In case of emergency a quick panel decision is needed so that both religion and mother were protected. If panel of doctors had given a proper decision and quick decision considering emergency then this wouldnt hv occured. Whats the point in panel taking a decision after somebody dies? Religion is there to protect the people . Killing somebody in the name of religion is really a murder and sin.

Fact is, Religion was given preference and weightage over humanity. No point in arguing over the legitimacy of Abortion. What makes me more angry is that I don't know whom to blame, The system, The religion or the doctors who let religion intimidate their sense of humanity. Sickening, how one can let religion overpower their sense of duty and humanity. Absolutely despicable. That particular Irish hospital just gave Christianity a bad name. As simple as that. No excuse!

Ireland's constitution officially bans abortion, but a 1992 Supreme Court ruling found the procedure should be legalized for situations when the woman's life is at risk from continuing the pregnancy. Five governments since have refused to pass a law resolving the confusion, leaving Irish hospitals reluctant to terminate pregnancies except in the most obviously life-threatening circumstances.
The vast bulk of Irish women mostly Catholic's wanting abortions, an estimated 4,000 per year, simply travel next door to England, where abortion has been legal on demand since 1967. But that option is difficult, if not impossible, for women in failing health.

    Latest Info:
She was admitted on 21st, confirm miscarriage on same day, but never intervened to safe termination for 2 more days leading to septicemia though they terminated it on 24th.
On 27th her heart, kidneys & liver stop functioning.
    28th she was pronounced dead.
Here the medical staff should be blamed for negligence than the law of the land.
As far as I know Catholics permit termination of pregnancy should the mothers life is at danger due to medical condition. But choice is given to the parents.
Here doctors have failed & to wriggle out of lawsuit quote religious laws of the land.
Parents could have opted to move to Northern Ireland where the law is different.
But I have to admit its FATE, but her sacrifice will help future mothers in same condition as public opinion is strong against the medical negligence of doctors right now.

Abortion is against the will of God I fully agree with it and also agree that one should abide by the rule of the land. However what happened in this country takes us back by 50 years. God never said “let the mother die but save the child”. God’s 5th commandment is “You shall not kill”. Neglecting miscarrying mother’s life in the name of saving the life of an unborn child, because of foetal heartbeat is beyond my understanding. This is either the hospitals have misinterpreted the countries law or they understand only medical terms and not law.

An avoidable tragic incident if the law of the land had been genuinely applied. It is acceptable that killing or aborting a healthy (living) unborn child in the womb is an offence, but in this case there was miscarriage, which means the foetus was dead resulting in septicaemia. So where is the question of "killing" the unborn when the foetus was already dead, risking the mother's life? This is an act of sheer negligence on the part of the hospital authorities more so owing to the inaction by the Indian Embassy officials.

Even in US after 20 weeks of pregnancy abortion is performed only if mothers life is in danger(I believe in this case it was)...and that opinion should come from a panel of physicians , not one doctor who is performing abortion.

When you have a heartbeat in a foetus its cruel to terminate pregnency for silly reasons.

US is not a Catholic Country we have only 30% Catholic population here... but this is law of our land no exceptions here...if you dont like this go to other country where abortion laws are lax and do whatever you want and be ready to defend your actions in "Gods Court"...

Please note, in western countries laws are followed strictly and they are not strtched to suit some...even though what happened here was sad,,, being dentist this lady should have anticipated this in advance and found suitable actions proactively.
