London, Jul 4: Australian Open champion Madison Keys suffered a stunning third-round exit at Wimbledon on Friday, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Germany’s Laura Siegemund on Court Two.

Ranked 104th in the world, 37-year-old Siegemund produced a composed and clinical performance to send the American sixth seed packing, marking one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far. Keys, who claimed her first Grand Slam title in Melbourne earlier this year by defeating Aryna Sabalenka, never found her rhythm and made 31 unforced errors during the match.

The defeat adds Keys to a growing list of top seeds who have already exited the women's draw, including Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Jasmine Paolini, and Zheng Qinwen. Only world number one Sabalenka remains among the top six seeds.

For Keys, it was a bitter fourth of July, spent bowing out early at the All England Club, where she has never advanced beyond the quarter-finals in 11 appearances.

Siegemund, meanwhile, advances to the Wimbledon last 16 for the first time in her career. “When you beat a great player like Madison, you have to be really happy,” she said. “If you don’t have nerves in this moment, you are probably dead.”

The veteran German, who earlier ousted Leylah Fernandez, was calm under pressure. “There’s no pressure for me anymore. I don’t feel like I need to prove anything,” she added.

Siegemund’s best Grand Slam showing remains her 2020 French Open quarter-final run, but she now stands as the oldest player left in the women’s draw at Wimbledon 2024.
