Bangalore, Dec 1: Even as the ruling BJP seems to be jittery over its prospects of coming back to power in the ensuing assembly polls in Karnataka following the resignation as an MLA and also from the primary membership from the saffron party by former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa to form his own Karnataka Janata Party on Friday, the chief minister Jagadish Shettar expressed confidence of successfully handling the State Legislature Session at the Belgaum Suvarna Soudha from December 5.
"The legislature session will be held as scheduled,” the Chief Minister said after offering floral tributes to former chief minister Kengal Hanumanthaiah on his 32nd death anniversary by garlanding his statue in front of Vidhana Soudha on Saturday.
Shettar appeared to be quite confident after barely five MLAs and a few MLCs, who were known to be loyal to the Lingayat stalwart had accompanied his procession to hand over the resignation letter to Assembly speaker K G Bopaiah in Vidhana Soudha on Friday afternoon. There were barely two MPs, including Yeddyurappa’s own son B Y Raghavendra, accompanied him.
Yeddyurappa is scheduled to launch is new party at Haveri at a massive rally and formally take over its leadership on December 9.
The chief minister said the government did not expect any trouble during the coming legislature session.
The ruling party is confident that not many BJP legislators and MPs would participate in the Haveri rally.
The State Government is observing a day’s holiday on account of Kanakadasa Jayanti. The inaugural function of the 16th biennial conference of the State level Judicial Officers Association, scheduled to be in Bangalore on Saturday, was cancelled on account of the death of former prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral in Delhi on Friday.
The Supreme Court judge H L Dattu, Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Vikramjit Sen and Karnataka State Judicial Officers’ Association Secretary N S Patil were present and mourned the death of former Prime Minister.
The Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar did not attend the programme. However, the technical sessions were held later.
