I do hope that Eula Dsouza gets the DC / Local Panchayat etc to do up the road from Vamanjur to Pilikula. Also good street lighting with sodium vapour lamps. A 4 lane from Vamanjur to Pilikula would be ideal for this tourist spot. One gets an ere feeling while riding a scooter on this dangerous road after sunset.

I thank Daijiworld for having published this article to create awareness among people about arrival of these many Cruise Liners and Foreign Tourists.
Dinesh Shetty / Ruchir - Thank you for your words of appreciation.
All readers and people who have commented - it is good to read what is being written.
Being the direct contact with these guets, ground realities are quite tough to handle.
Mangalore has been appreciated for Port Facilities, Ground handling services provided by Local Tour operators, cleanliness of city, warmth and Hospitality by the Mangalore people with whom they come in contact - all appreciative.
What could be done to improve is : better roads,( specially towards Moodbidri neat Thousand Pillar Temple ) basic facilities like rest rooms, awareness on importance of tourism. I am not sure how many of us know that Tourism is Number ONE Industry in providing Employment and 03rd Revenue earning industry in the world.
But for Mangalore : unfortunately Tourism Dept has always given a step motherly treatment. Mangalore has always been given least priority for Tourism Development - for reasons best known to the Dept. We dont even get enough Tourism maps / road maps on Mangalore / DK. We have them printed and photocopied at our own cost.
We place on records our gratitude to Port Authorities, Chairman & all other concerned officials who support us unconditionally, along with CISF / Port Shipping Agents who stand by us to ensure a smooth movements of these huge Cruise Liners.

The toilets in Pilikula are in bad shape. I don't think that they have been cleaned for over 6 months. Some of the urinals are broken. I hope they are redone / repaired / replaced at the earliest. In this situation, how does one take tourists there ? The approach road from Vamanjur to Pilikula is in bad shape too.The street lighting is also poor . So much money is spent on Pilikula but nobody thinks of amenities like this. That's the pathetic side of India !

Mr.V Nayak,Switzerland, I think due to paucity of time it may not be manageable to drive upto Pilikula. Generally, the tourists have to get back to the ship for lunch. The average age of a pax is about 65-68 years. They are also slow on their feet. Your idea is although appreciated.

    Lavina D'souza,Mangalore,

I was not suggesting to rake them to Pilikula. I know how awful the roads that lead to Pilikula are and the lack of basic infrastructure there. What I was suggesting was to have a open air a museum of some sort like the miniature one they have at Pilikula on the heritage of Kanara districts and their handicrafts. I know that some time ago Dr.Hegde of Dharmasthala created a temporary one like that. But that needs co-operation and support by the state and district goverrnments who do not care much for tourism.

SM..I dont agree with you. By nature, we Indians are clean within our household but the moment we walk out of our house, we are, probably the dirtiest people on earth with almost no regard for others or for the nature. Prove me wrong if you can. If you can afford, go to the poorest country in the world - Peru and you will be shocked how immaculately clean it is. Go to Sri Lanka and you will be put to shame! You will not find dirt accumulated on the road side nor a pot-hole on the road anywhere.

Tourists are very important to any city for its growth. Tourists bring business to the city and creates lot of employment. It is important to note these factors and convert a hilly and beautiful city like ours into a Tourist Paradise. But, it all starts with ourselves first. Let us be clean with all our surrounding as much as we are within our own house. Strictly regulate taxi and rickshaw fares so no cheating takes place.

I was a guide on one of the many tourist buses ferrying the tourists from US & UK through Mangalore. The highlight of the Mangalore city tour was the home of Madame Joan Paris at Balmatta circle. The tourists were so exited to see the old grinding stone and curry masala being prepared / ground. There was none who did not click photographs or take a video shot of the grinding. This house is one of the oldest homes in Mangalore. I am told that the residence was built by the 5th British Collector & Magistrate of Canara District Michael Thomas Harris in the early 18th century. ( Michael Thomas Harris' father was General George Harris who defeated Tippu Sultan in 1799 at Srirangapatnam ). That's the reason the traffic island at Balmatta is called " collectors gate ". I too in the meanwhile learnt a bit of local history !

I was a guide on one of the buses travelling through Mangalore City along with 30 US tourists ( in my bus )on Dec 3rd. Although they visited Agra , Delhi , Jaipur & Mumbai prior to Mangalore, they were commenting on how clean Mangalore was as compared to the other Indian cities. It was great to hear that from these tourists. These tourists were so very appreciative of the Mangalore hospitality and the people in general...... except for an auto driver who demanded USD 50 to take a couple from the City Centre to Kadri Temple. Among'st the US & UK travel agents who also come on the cruise ships, Mangalore is a preferred destination as compared to Goa. Three Cheers to Mangalore !

Also i would like to comment that the tourism Department Of Karnataka plays no role in these tours and we do not get any support from them for all this. The efforts to bring foreign tourists into this city is wholly been due to our travels' efforts and no help was given from the Tourism department.
The port authorities have been of much help I Thank them - From the Traffic manager to CISF. And the Police Department of Mangalore City for the huge co- operation for operations within the city. Thank you all

First of all i would like to thank all of you for your comments. John Tauro- Its not a joke to start a Cruise liner fleet in India. A daring Louise Cruises was to start operations for Indians on inland waters- The Taxes for a cruise ship are- Entertainment tax, inland water tax, ship berthing fees, which comes upto atleast 1 crore/port. Thanks to our governments heavy tax burden they've backed out.
As far as the foreigners concerned they comment saying that Mangalore is the cleanest apart from Mumbai, Goa and cochin.
Pilikula- Heritage village is part of their tour i would like to say. But please note, the facilities at the heritage village are minimal. The youngest age group who come for tours are above 60 years of age. The Loose gravel and round stones are dangerous and if they slip and fall could cause severe injury. When approached authorities to put interlocks between huts, it was denied. Please note these guests/ foreigners are insured only inside the ship and if anything happens to them when they are on the tour the ship is not responsible for any of the medical expenses when they are on the tour and we have to bear all the expenses.
So all these suggestions to promote these places are very much appreciated but the public of mangalore should help support the cause of making mangalore a tourist place by "Keeping the city clean", "urging authorities to make infrastructural developments", " make sanitation facilities available at all tourism places".

Why don't Indian shipping companies operate cruise-cum-passenger services along the long coast of the country? While foreign tourists visit India there are many middle class Indians who have not seen their own country. There are even those in the hinterland who haven't seen the sea or any of our beaches. Let the less fortunate people our country too enjoy sailing on cruise ships at least once in a lifetime. Further foreign tourists on long term visit can also travel on Indian cruise vessels which will bring in hard currency to the country.

It is a pity that Mangalore does not have more places of interest to show. Local handicraft by artisans and a museum of the sort like at Pilikula NisargaDhama would be great.
