Belthangady, July 1: In a major breakthrough, the Dharmasthala police have arrested a man on Monday, June 30, who had been absconding for nearly eight years in connection with a violent attempted murder case reported in 2011 in Thumbay village, near Bantwal.

The accused, Akbar Siddiq, a resident of B Mood village in Bantwal, had been evading trial and repeatedly failed to appear before the court, leading to a standing warrant for his arrest.

The case, registered under Crime No. 35/2011 at the Bantwal Rural police station, involves multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code — 143, 147, 148, 447, 448, 504, 323, 324, 326, 354, 506, 307, 427 read with 149 — covering offences such as unlawful assembly, assault, grievous hurt, criminal intimidation, and attempted murder.

Acting on credible information, the Dharmasthala Police successfully apprehended Siddiq on Monday, June 30, and handed him over to the Bantwal Rural police. He was later produced before the court, which has remanded him to judicial custody.
