Fr Baptist Menezes Appointed Vicar General of Udupi Diocese

Media Release

Udupi, Dec 14: In a brief and impressive liturgical ceremony, the Bishop of Udupi Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo on Friday December 14 announced the appointment of Fr Baptist Menezes, the former Episcopal Vicar, as the Vicar General of the Diocese of Udupi.

The service was conducted by the Bishop at Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi in the presence of a small gathering.

Invoking the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Bishop read a passage from the Holy Gospel and gave a short message thereafter. Then he invited Fr Baptist Menezes to make the Profession of Faith and take oath of fidelity and secrecy. Thereafter he handed over the appointment order to Fr Baptist Menezes.

Fr Baptist Menezes is the native of Our Lady of Health Church at Shirva, son of the late Louis Menezes and the late Mary Magdelene Menezes. He was born on July 28, 1948 and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Mangalore on October 25, 1974. He has a doctorate in Moral Theology from the Lateran University in Rome. After being an assistant Parish priest at the Most Holy Redeemer Church at Agrar and Assistant Director at St Antony’s Charitable Institutions at Jeppu, Mangalore, he was deputed for higher studies in Moral Theology to Rome in 1977 and on completion of his doctoral studies in 1982, he joined the staff of St Peter’s Pntifical Seminary at Bangalore, which he served till 1994.

Thereafter he was appointed Administrator of St Joseph’s Inter-diocesan Seminary at Jeppu, Mangalore in 1995 and Director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions in 1997, the post he held till 2007. He was appointed Episcopal Vicar of the District of Udupi by the Bishop of Mangalore on 6th July 2007, an office he shouldered till Udupi was canonically erected into a new Diocese on 15th October 2012.

Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo had issued a letter to all priests serving in the parishes of the Diocese of Udupi requesting them to propose two names to the office of the Vicar General even though canonically it was his prerogative to appoint a Vicar General of his choice. He appointed Fr Baptist Menezes as the Vicar General since he had obtained highest suggestive votes for the said office from the priests of the Diocese.

In the first place I would say KUDOS to Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Lobo on his excellent choice. For any one to function well - he should have able assistance and I assume that his choice has fallen on the right people. He has chosen well - people well educated and with a fund of knowledge which should go a long way in establishing credibility at all levels. Father Baptist Menezes has given a good account of himself in various capacities in his earlier appointments under our Bishop Aloysius. I had the pleasure of knowing Father Valerian Mendonca for well over two decades. With his academic background, musical talent and a good approach with the younger generation, he should go a long way. I can only say that Mangalore's loss is Udupi's gain.

I am extremely happy to note that Bishop Gerald has made a good beginning in soliciting assistance from other areas by ing help from Father J.B. Sequeira O.F.M. well known and efficient from The Franciscan order. Indeed this is a very good move.

WELL BEGUN IS HALF DANE AND I AM SURE BISHOP GERALD HAS BEGUN WELL and there is no doubt that he will take Udupi diocese to great heights.
