Mangalore: Now, Pay Minimum Rs 20 for Auto Rickshaw Ride

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (DV)

Mangalore, Dec 16: Responding to the demands of auto rickshaw drivers in the district, the regional transport (RTA) has increased the minimum fare of auto rickshaws from Rs 17 to Rs 20.

The revised fare came into effect on Saturday December 15.

As per the new order, passengers will be charged Rs 20 for the first 1.5 km, and thereafter Rs 13 per kilometre.

The waiting charge will be 25 percent of the total fare after the intial 15 mintues. Luggage weighing more than 20 kg will be charged at Rs 2 per additional kg.

Between 10 pm and 5 am, the auto driver can charge up to 1.5 times the meter fare. Also, they are allowed to charge passengers 1.5 times the meter fare if they ferry them outside the Mangalore city corporation limits at any time.

The RTA has directed auto drivers to display the revised fare list prominently in their autos and to upgrade their meters as per the new fare within a month. RTA has also urged the public to lodge a complaint with it if auto drivers demand excess fare.

In a place like M’lore Rickshaw fare hike has no meaning. Rickshaw operators have their own sunset and sun rise timings beyond which they charge 1.5 to 2 times the meter reading, many don’t go by the meter at all. They simply charge whatever comes to their minds, usually on the pretext that ‘ Auto has to go empty on return’. Most of the tourists remember Mangalore for two things: Ideal Ice cream for it’s quality and quantity and auto rickshaws for the day light robbery.

Looking at the frequency at which rates are increased arbitrarily by up to 20% each time it appears RTO is under pressure!!! As someone has said in Surathkal and beyond area they charge min 20 already, no questions asked or you will get abused!! Such is the state of affairs and they say it is developing!! It is sure we are developing but digressing instead of progressing!! Middle class is fed up!!! Jai Kar-Nataka!!!

Nagesh, You have a problem of understanding English. What Sheila said is “In Rs. 600, he would get dal, rice and wheat”. I am sure a poor man can get 30 kgs of rice and 2 kgs of dal with Rs.600.
Thanks to UPA, poor people now know what is Dal......

ok with the fare hike ? but apart from mangalore limits nobody is using meter.meters should be made compulsary for all the regions. For example the autos in surathkal used to charge Rs. 20. for distance less than 1.5 km and poor citizens have to bear it as there is no meter. Now i hope they will charge Rs.25. and while returning back they used to charge Rs.5 for single seat now they will charge Rs. 10. If the authorities budge by their demands, they should take care of the interests of the citizens also. So I demand go by meter any where, any place, any time.

Those who can afford they will pay the increased fare, those who can’t they walk for shorter distance or they take public buses for longer distance. Those who start walking feel healthy and their physical strength as well as immune system will increase so they will spend less on medical bill. Rickshaw Driver will earn more but most of them spend extra money earned on Bar & Restaurants, only few of them take home what they earned extra income. So, at other end, economy will improve somewhere in all sorts of businesses somehow. This is called “Economics”. Hope no one will blame BJP for this situation

The hike is too much. Any how we are not getting the change back from the auto drivers. This is ok. But RTO should make strict to display the complaint no. in all the auto for any complaints from the passenger. Also Auto drivers should not deny for any place inside the city limits. This should be taken care by the RTO.

DUE TO THE BAD CAN SAY WORST CONDITIONS OF LANES N ROADS AROUND MANGLORE CITY CIRCLE THE MAINTAINANCE COST OF THE RICKSHAW IS VERY HIGH COMPARE TO BOMBAY, BANGLORE, MYSORE AND OTHER PRIME CITIES. Rs.3 hike in fair not a big income to the aam aadmi rickshaw operators. Be optimisitc and support.

1.5 KM 20 is ok. But there after 1KM 13 is too much. Better go by buses even now KSRTC buses have started which r more comfortable than private buses.

Mangalore needs a Metro train system that runs from the present railway station right through KS Rao Road, PVS on MG Road upto Kuloor and another one that goes from Hampankatta via Kankanadi right upto Padil and a third one from Jyothi, Bendur, Kulshekhar right upto Vamanjoor. Possible?

Mangalore majority of the well off receive money from abroad or are in business who can afford cars or even 25Rs min fare. What about the middle class and poor who for some reason have to use an auto?? It is the aam aadmi to be considered!! Most of the times, the drivers will not go to destinations they do not like or even ask for 1.5-2x even during day time depending on their mood!! It shows that there is lots of easy money in the system as even a big metro like Mumbai with 20x population of Mang does not offer autos the luxury of charging so high a fare??? And luggage extra????

Some day, the cost will be so much that people will find running their two wheelers and cars will be cheaper than using cabs/autos. I am not against this raise, they must have had their compulsions and reasons to do so. However, with rising income, people will do the math and start using private transport and rely less on public transport. Even in intercity transport, the cost of 2 KSRTC Airavat Volvo tickets and two people travelling in a mid-size diesel hatchback (eg. Swift diesel) is the same. If 4 people are traveeling then the car is 50% cheaper.

Are we ready for a revolutionary change in our land transport sector, with a concept change, to make a world of difference?
Do we feel the need to eliminate or reduce the health hazardous air pollution and peace disturbing sound pollution, with a considerable reduction in fuel consumption, for a healthy and peaceful environment?
In communication, we have achieved wireless and mobile technology (from primitive landline stage), which is incredible and unbelievable. Similarly, why can’t have revolution in transport sector too (from a lengthy evolution, which is facing the heat of expensive fuel) for excellent solutions and amazing benefits?

I like Ismail Perinje's statement "Everything will grow with Mangalore growing"!! In what way Mangalore is growing? It is a Tier II city (big town developing into a city)!! Check out the DA difference for PSU and other employees who are transferred from Metros to here? If Mumbai can manage with 15 the fare here should be never more than 15???? Most of auto drivers are rowdy type and do not care for even the police!!!

There appears to be some kind of conspiracy between rickshaw people and RTA. In Bombay, the public is sensitive such raise in fare. Mangalore people appear to be richer class who dont mind if the rickshaw people charge even 50Rs. Otherwise, why are the people not agitating on this? What is the justification for rise in rickshaw fare? Soon Mlore will be the costliest city in the world and then all will realise.

Based on the situation and with use of advanced technology, why the capacity of the rickshaw can’t be increased (for 5 to 8 persons instead to 3 only) and why the efficiency can’t be improved with more mileage?
