Mangalore, Dec 18: The department of commerce, St Agnes College organized a colourful activity on community awareness campaign on waste management at the college auditorium here on Monday December 17.

Max Rasquinha, founder of Toastmasters Club and director of International Institute of Public Policy (IIPP), and Scott Mc Carley from Texas, USA were the chief guests.

Max Rasquinha in his address said, "I feel privileged to bring my US friends to India and show them my mother country. It also brings me pride, honour and pleasure to talk about the culture, heritage, religions, sects, ethnics of my country. I feel proud of my nation’s largest democracy with over 1.3 billion population and its Constitution. All of us have to work hard for betterment of the society."

He added, "We Indians are true friends of Americans; we support you in all ways. Even the nuclear treaty was signed successfully. We wish our relations continue with peace and stability. I am happy about this institution, for all their efforts made for the welfare of the society.  Finally we need to work for mankind.”

Scott said that every person should take up the responsibility of protecting nature. "Even in the USA efforts are on to create awareness among the people," he said, appreciating the hard work put in by the students of St Agnes College in this regard.

Professor Devi Prabha in her keynote address said, "The students here are trained to think and move beyond their academics. Here the talents of students are used in the right manner. Students are involved in extra co-curricular activities."

She further added, "If uneducated people do mistakes then it is their ignorance. But if the educated do mistakes it cannot be forgiven. If we cannot protect our nature who will else will do that? Despite being educated we throw waste in streets instead of using dustbins. It is true that if one woman is educated then the whole family is educated. The students’ here are putting in their efforts to create awareness among us to make the society plastic-free. The concern of the students towards nature is reflected in their efforts to create awareness."

Alin D’Souza welcomed the gathering while professor Malini Hebbar compered the programme. Jessie Rasquinha and others were present.

Students of St Agnes College created awareness on waste management through various innovative performances and presentations like mime acts, Yakshagana and skits.
