Mangalore, Dec 18: A national-level conference on ‘Science and Spirituality' was held at Eric Mathias hall, St Aloysius College here on Tuesday December 18.

The conference was inaugurated by Dr Alex Hankey, professor of yoga and physical science in Bangalore by lighting lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais.

Fr Swebert D'Silva, principal, Fr Dr Leo D'Souza, director laboratory of applied biology, Professor ML Sureshnath, convener, Dr Ivan Pinto, organizing secretary, Dr Narayan Bhat, organizing secretary shared the dias.

Dr Alex Hankey who obtained his PhD in theoretical physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technolgy, USA in his address said that the subject ‘Science and Spirituality' has been close to his heart since years. After persuing his graduation from Cambridge, he decided to spend his life to know the conflict between science and spirituality.

"Physics likes to discuss things which are stable. Science cannot prove the existence of god. Science decides by observation and experiment, constructs theories and assumes that its theories are final and universally applicable," said Hankey. "The present situation of science is that scientists tend to assume that they have final knowledge of how the world works," he said.

"I am sure this conference will help you to strengthen your personal life," he added.

In his presidential address, Fr Swebert D'Silva said that the conference was apt for present times as our society is a multi-cultural and multi-religious society. "The topic is relevant to the society as we find much intolerance in the society because of religion. Our main concern is to live in peace and harmony. The conference will give a clear cut idea on the topic," he said.

"We tend to think that science and spirituality are contradictory elements, but in fact, they somehow complement each other. Spirituality must lead to certain amount of action, that is, it should help in the development of self and of others. Only then spirituality makes sense," said Fr Swebert.

Resource persons like Dr Willy R D'Souza, professor S Abdul Rahiman, Dr Job Kozhanthadam, Dr Shanthala Priyadarshini spoke on various aspects of science and spirituality.

Representatives of different religious organizations, college lecturers, general public, and students participated in the conference.

Vice-principals Fr Francis Almeida, Dr Judith Pinto, Ronald Pinto among others were present.

Spirituality is the essence of life while Science is sense.
No Science has explained ever about or invented/created Happiness and Sadness. Spirituality gives an answer to sadness and leads to happiness.
People should not misjudge spirituality to religiosity (i.e. a blind implementation of rituals)

If people can meditate upon their existence or purpose of life, they will get some answer...as the saying goes, death cannot be revoked nor our body can be prevented from decay but we can preserve our soul after death. Can Science do this preservation of our soul/spirit, it only attempts to preserve body/life to some extent.

Science explains our world and mankind has profited enormously from the results of science. There is no doubt.
It is not the task of science to prove if God exists. Science decides by observation and experiment, constructs theories and assumes that its theories are final and universally applicable.
Are science and spirituality contradictory elements? I deny that strongly, somehow both compliment each other.
Fr Swebert D'Silva is right. Our main concern is to live in peace and harmony. Spirituality must lead to certain amount of action, that is, it should help in the development of self and of others.

The history of science is a story of success. The inventions which have been made are unbelievable.
Or the scientific developments in biology, computer science, genetic, medicine, the Internet.
The world has become a global village.
The Information technology has changed our world, even customs, values have changed. In many parts of our world there is finally equality between the genders.
Information is available in seconds, we are connected all over the world. For example Skype is used by some hundred million of people all over the world.
Though there is a high standard of living and a working social welfare system there are million of people I refer to Germany, where I live, addicted to alcohol and other drugs, million suffer from depressions and other psychological disorders.
I am of the opinion, one of the main reasons is, human beings who are addicted, do not have a meaning of life.
For me spirituality is an inner trait. Human beings need something to believe or to live for an objective.
For example, Buddhism, meditation and yoga are extremely popular in Germany. Educated and skilled people are attracted by them.
Others find their meaning of life in God and they go to church and attend various religious services.

I personally need a meaning of life and spirituality.

Faith and spirituality and a meaning of life helps in the development of self and of others.

Mankind needs science and spirituality. I am totally convinced of that.

    Best regards

Science is very close or goes in tandem with spirituality.Religion is rituals and business. It is also conditioning of the human being.Eminent professors like Richard Dawkins and 99% of scientists do not believe in religion.
