Mangalore: Prepaid Auto Rickshaw Counters at Three Places from Jan 1

Daijiworld Media Network – Mumbai (DV)

Mangalore, Dec 22: Regional transport officer C Mallikarjuna on Friday December 21 said that prepaid auto rickshaw counters will start functioning from January 1 at Kankanady railway junction, central railway station and KSRTC bus stand, Bejai.

Delivering a talk on 'Road Safety' organized by Kanara Chambers of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) at its meeting hall, Mallikarjuna said that all three counters will start functioning full fledged at the three places.

The prepaid counter at Kankanady junction, which was supposed to have started functioning from April this year, was delayed due to problems in setting up the kiosk on the part of the bank and other such obstacles, he explained.

Morever, with the pre-paid counters being set up now, printed receipts will be issued using 'simputers' instead of handwritten receipts. Three of these simputers were handed over by the KCCI to RTO on the occasion.

The RTO has also planned training its employees on soft skills. "These days, bus drivers are found to be losing their patience because of their hectic schedules. It is a tough job as they have to drive all day. Sometimes due to fatigue they lose patience, but instead of blaming or criticizing the drivers, they should be trained on soft skills. Hence, the road safety week has been organized to train them and education those who flout rules," he said.

He also raised the issue of women safety and said that in case women face sexual harassment or misbehaviour from drivers or conductors, they should note down the vehicle number, time of travel and other details and complain to the RTO. The department will take action against the culprits and may even cancel their permits, he assured.

"We believe that the people of Dakshina Kannada are intelligent. We should follow rules and help in their implementation," he added.

On the issue of tax evasion on vehicles by central government employees, he said that employees who reside in Karnataka have to pay lifetime tax to the state even if their vehicle was registered in another state, while those who have their vehicles registered in Karnataka and stay in other states can pay annual tax.

V Raman urged that drunken drivers should be punished and parking of vehicles in the city should be systematized. Judith Mascarenhas suggested that stereo systems should be prohibited in buses. Issues regarding footpaths, speed breakers, horns, signals and so on were also raised.

Nigam Vasani of KCCI, Jevan Saldana, Mohan Pai Maroor , M Ganesh Bhat were present on the occasion.

Some years back, I vividly remember the taxi drivers in Bombay swindling overseas passengers arriving at Bombay's Sahar International Airport during the wee hours. This fleecing tactic tarnished the image of Bombay’s taxi drivers to such an extent that passengers lost trust and plainly refused to avail taxi services. I still remember Mr. A. L. Quadros of the Bombay Taximens Union Leader expressed his displeasure and helplessness UNTIL somebody sprang up a scheme for prepaid taxi service. To this extent, taxi drivers also suffered miserably. Later a fixed charge was levied by the authorities at the airport counters depending upon the passengers destination (on a km basis). This plan evoked such a huge response that it became an instant hit and forced the taxi authorities to accede to this scheme. Today, barring some stray incidents here and there, which I think is hardly heard off, this scheme is successfully going through without any hiccups. Needless to say, both taxi driver and the passenger(s) are benefitted. The most important feature ... the passenger is provided with a printed ticket having toll free / concerned authorities contact numbers. If a certain driver tries to fleece/threaten passengers more than the actual fare, the passenger can dial the provided numbers and complain against the errant driver by providing the ticket number or the taxi number. Subsequently, the authorities would then track down the concerned taxi and take punitive action by cancelling his license or penalizing him severely, depending upon the nature of complaint. This scheme is so popular that people don't have to travel by train since taxis ply outside Bombay jurisdiction and to far flung suburbs of neighbouring Thane and Pune areas. I suggest such a scheme like Bombay be introduced from the Bajpe Airport, initially for the auto-drivers and later on for taxis plying within and beyond Mangalore metropolis. At the end of it all, it will benefit everybody.

Dear "JESSE MANGALORE\KUWAIT" it is people like you who spoil the system. You should not have given the extra Rs.50.00/- it is because of your kind deed that all others have to suffer. Later they only make a Blah Blah..............!!! Please passengers auto or taxi pls do not give anything extra confirm the fare before hand if the driver acts smart initially, because when you reach your destination the drivers will simply extort money saying that the roads were bad or no passengers, etc. Take care Guys!!!
Merry X'mas and Happy New Year.

It's a welcome move. But I am not sure how successful it will be.

I recall an incident at Bangalore a few years ago - I boarded an Auto at Majestic Prepaid Counter. Before I boarded I had seen the same driver arguing with the Police. He told me that the Police was asking him to go to a destination where he was not willing to go. He casually told me that if at all the Police had forced him to take that particular passenger, he would drive for half a kilometre and then pretend as if his Auto had broken down!!!
This is a potential loophole in this system which needs to be looked into by the RTO.

There is no shortage or rules in India but implementation of the rules is a big problem. The whole culture has to change and that is something that cannot happen overnight. Education has to start from school ASAP for the results to be seen in 20 years time if not sooner. This education should be for everyone including members of the public.

Auto metering issue is a good example of corruption in India. This meter issue can never be solved in any of Indian cities. That is a different world. They keep on looting passengers, govt.keep on implementing rules for 1-2 days, then GOVINDAAAAA.... It's like Anchilath Inchilath.

It is very difficult to introduce any system in Mangalore. Because every body is too Smart.First Educate the Auto Drivers ,Then Implement the new System. Any body can tell how many times Pre-Paid Auto System has Failed? Only Waste of time to have this type of Functions.

The need of the hour in the city of Mangalore is the footpaths. We do not have footpaths in M'lore. It looks like only the motorists pay tax. Whatever space is there after the wonderful roads in M'lore is used for parking so pedestrians have no space in M'lore to walk. Silvia should know that parking is not silly, illegal parking should be fined. What about drivers talking on their cellphones? Even they should be fined when they are on their phone they risking their lives and also fellow riders and drivers.

Who will discipline the Auto Drivers who refuse the ride to a location of passengers choice after 8.00 pm.

I have experienced on many a occasion, driver would reply - 'I am not going there, look for one behind him. And,when you approach hime he would point out again to check with the one behind him. And lucky, if you would find one who agrees to take to your place.

    How we can resolve it?

Dinesh you are right.. but whom to complain. The law defenders only extort money from the public for silly reasons like parking, helmets etc. They loot the honest law keepers. We need to be alert and cautious in this Mangalore to avoid falling in corrupt people.

In our South Canara, auto rikshaw drivers, bus driver/conductors are notorious elements, worst than Taliban terrorists!. Kankanady railway station and Udupi railway stations are the main sites of extortion by auto drivers. Most of you must have faced bad experience at least once. All auto and city bus drivers should be counseled regarding road safety and public service. Those who indulge looting common passengers or insulting them should be punished and their driving license should be scraped immediately.
