Mangalore, Dec 29: The Diocese of Mangalore on Saturday December 29 evening prayed in front of the Bishop’s House for the repose of soul of ‘Amanat’ (name changed), a 23-year-old paramedical student who was raped and attacked in a moving bus in Delhi on December 16 and succumbed to death on Saturday December 29 in Singapore.

"Amanat is the symbol of all the victims of sexual assaults on women and is also the symbol of all those who fight against the atrocities on women across the nation.  We condemn with sadness all the sexual assaults and atrocities against women which have taken place in our own place here and in all the places across the nation," said Sabiha Boomigowda, a woman activist of the city and lecturer.

"We deeply mourn the death of Amanat, we pray for all the victims of atrocities and condemn such inhuman actions," said Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, the Bishop of Mangalore.

Offering prayers for her soul, Bishop expressed condolences to her family members on the occasion.

He urged the law makers and authorities to enact necessary laws and implement them efficiently to ensure the safety and security of women in the country.

He called upon the society at large to create an atmosphere where no woman in this country lives in fear of getting raped or abused and asked all social organizations to create awareness to prevent such incidents in future.

The Bishop paid a flower homage and lit a candle and offered prayers for the soul of Amanat.  A number of religious, social and political leaders prayed on the occasion with lighted candles.

Chancellor Fr Henry Sequeira, PRO Fr William Menezes, Fr Onil D’Souza, Fr Elias D’Souza, Fr George D’Souza, Fr Victor G.  D’Souza, Marcel Monteiro, Ivan D’Souza, Sushil Noronha, Mariamma Thomas, J R Lobo, Sr Assumpta BS, Sr Mishel BS, Sr Stella and others were present on the occasion.

Women are mostly treated as "lesser beings", in homes, at the work place, on the street, almost everywhere. It is difficult to say when a woman, does not fall a prey to obscene remarks, disrespectful gestures, ogling eyes of men. Doesn't all this amount to "Rape"? Men who "rape" women in their thoughts, might not take long to do the same in action. When can we see the light of day when men learn to respect each woman, as just a human being. May "Amanat's" soul rest in peace and may her sacrifice be a lesson through implementation of harsher laws not put on paper but put into action.

As a Indian all must feel the grief, its our morality. This is a good expression but prayers are for all. Our main duty is to educate all who behaves ackwardly or who do not have the sense of one family, brothers and sisters. As a union we all are one. Unthinkable has happened to our beloved sister who was studying by doing part time tuition job and wanted ti live. Life is precious for all. She lost it because no body could help her at that moment. We have to end barbarism.

What is communal here. The protesters and people who praying don't even know the religion of the rape victim. It is you who are trying to politicize the issue. All our governments including citizens have failed to protect the daughters of India today.

Please stop making irrelevant and unrelated comments. All political parties are equally responsible for the sorry state of society and economy today and no party can point their fingers to others.

Now is the right time & opportunity to take up the matter that happened in Mangalore. Molestation of girls by BJP while having a private party inside the service/holiday homes. That was a sad time where people where only watching the drama including the police folks. Indeed it is to mourn but no one comes forward to defend.

I doubt you are a advocate and petty on the people who engage your services. Your comments are derogatory and insulting to the entire priests which is unwarranted.

    @Maxim Mathias, Shirva, Dubai

You have raised a very pertinent point. Did the church support the protests in Ujire during the Sowjanya. If the answer is no, then the church should ensure that the protests are organized for local issues as well.

Given the current situation in India Church is in a better position to put the message across as most of the people can be communicated very easily. The need of the hour is church leaders should engage with the other religious leaders in causes like these to be more effective.

I see much hype is being created on the death girl. The greiving is reasonable and the cause is just. But I am surprised why same zeal is not shown our religious leaders ,politicians. For the past 1 week not a single politician has come out of their cocoon. Even Rahul Gandhi who was projected as youth icon has not spoken a word ,except after her death. Rather than having candle light marches, prayer service why don't we strengthen the exiting law and make the punishment stronger. The death of one girl in Delhi has raised so much concern, but not much is said about the recent victims in Kerala, Tamilnadu, Karnataka,MP,Haryana etc. etc. Just lip service or candle light marches will not suffice. Unless the character of the person commiting crime is not changed. The IT age has really changed the atmosphere by blatant use of pornography and other medium

I appreciate Mangalore Diocese for showing solidarity and coming out openly in condemning the brutal attack for this innocent girl "Amanat". I salute those who coming openly and showing thier spirit . Our political leaders are promising justice. But at the same time they are giving tickets to rapists, murderers, extortonist and doing all illegal works. Can you expect good results?Today they are showing sympathy with this brave girl and forget immediately. All political parties giving assurances. In our society we are not giving any important and respect to women. We have to change our mindset. What we watch in the electronic media and entertainment programme? What kind of movies they are producing ? This is the time for the government- ruling or opposition , they must act to change the law . R.I.P for this brave girl.

India is a lawless country ruled by corrupt people. We elected those leaders, so we are the one to be blamed for electing wrong person. It is high time to change our attitude towards casting our vote. Instead of casting vote based on certain political party let us start use our brain to identify real leaders who can take the country to the list of civilized world.

So much for the great cultural tradition of our country. A country filled with shameless men. Right from using every public place as their toilet and using every woman as their private property Indian men haven't evolved much. All we need is a complete make over of our education system and law which should be a nightmare for every offender. Can the saw called guardian of culture stand up now?

Very very sad indeed, may her soul rest in peace. I noticed that the western media (BBC and CNN) reported the death of the girl before most Indian media. And there is general outrage everywhere.
I am glad that world is outraged.
There are so many things wrong in India. Most of the people are uneducated. All they think about is putting the next meal on the table.
Indian politicians and bureaucrats have perfected the art of corruption and vote bank politics.
India needs wholesome change all over.
Hopefully this will be the moment.
    Good job done M'lore Diocese.

The monstrous crime against the young woman committed by 6 young men in Delhi makes one sad and speechless.
Quality newspapers in Germany like The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung, Die Welt and The Spiegel reported regularly on a daily basis about the raped young woman and her fight in hospitals in New Delhi and finally in Singapore.
The anger in India is growing by the day. The people take to the streets to show their outrage at what happened on a bus in New Delhi.
President Pranab Mukherjee said: "She is a true heroine and symbolizes the Indian youth and women for the best."
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sought after the death of the young woman, to appeal to the reason of his countrymen. "We have already seen, has drawn the emotions and energies to this incident," he said with regard to the mass protests on his website. This "understandable reaction" were a young country, the hope for change. At the same time, the Prime Minister called on the Indians to transform their emotions into "constructive" action. "It is now up to us to make sure that her death was not in vain," said Singh.
Singh is alleged to have been deaf to the protests and to proceed with a heavy hand against demonstrators. The government is now trying to demonstrate resolve: She wants to hold perpetrators to justice as soon as possible. Six men, including the bus driver, were arrested. It is expected that the process against them next week begins. They are, according to the news agency, Ian now accused of murder.
Many participants of the mass protests demanding the death penalty for the suspects. "A city is ashamed," the newspaper "Times of India" was titled after the attack. New Delhi is a "rape capital". According to official data, there was in the city last year to 572 rapes, this year there are already more than 600 Nationally, the numbers should be increased from 2,487 cases in 1971 to 24,206 in 2011. The figure is likely to be much higher. TV stations were following the rape of the 23-year-old reported around the clock from the "shock in India."
I doubt that there will be a quick resolve of the problems young Indian women face all over India.
There shall be continuous and not ending peaceful demonstrations and protests and more and more Indians should join NGOs to put pressure on the government to create a safe environment for women in India.

The editorial page article by Anup Surendranath in The Hindu is very interesting to read. Therefore I would like to quote: “ Any meaningful attempt to protect women against rape must engage with gendered notions of power entrenched in our families, our marriages, our workplaces, our educational institutions, our religions, our laws, our political parties and, perhaps, worst of all, in our minds. There are many violent manifestations of these entrenched patterns of power in our society and while rape is certainly one of them, it would be a great disservice to empowerment of women
