Saudi Arabia Beheads Lankan Maid for Murdering Infant

Colombo, Jan 9 (PTI) : Saudi Arabia has beheaded a Sri Lankan maid for killing a baby in her care in 2005, despite President Mahinda Rajapaksa's call for a stay of the execution.

Rizana Nafeek, who was on death row on charges of having killed a four-month-old baby, was beheaded in the Dawadmi province near the capital Riyadh.

In 2007, Nafeek was convicted of the murder. She, however, denied the charges.

The Saudi Arabian government has gone ahead with her (Nafeek) execution despite assurances as late as last week from Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia that she would be released, Sri Lankan newspaper Daily Mirror reported.

Members of Parliament observed a minute's silence in Rizana's memory, the report said.
On January 6, Rajapaksa had requested Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah to release Nafeek.

Yesterday, New York-based Human Rights Watch had also urged the King and the interior ministry to halt the execution of Nafeek.

    @Mr.Abdul Sakeer, I agree in India there is no law as such but in Saudi the law for the expatriates is never fair. There won't be any justice nor further investigation. I would only suggest the Govt. of Saudi to implement a fair and thorough investigation before beheading someone.

    It is really sad what has happened to this lady. If she has commited a crime such as murder and that too of a young child, then she should face her punsihment...But knowing Saudi Law anything can happen and anybody can be put to death.

    If the Law is implemented fair and truly 99% of Saudis Arabs and kings would have been beheaded by now... :)..... There is no such thing as justice in entire world.... the world is ruled by personal law , you deliver it under your favor...

    One of my close associates, an Arab who frequently visits KSA, has relatives living near the place of this tragic incident, told me that the baby died as a result of drinking contaminated milk, which was broughtfrom the local marker by its own mother. The maid's only fault was that, as usual, she fed the milk without knowing what was in it. And the maid was squarely blamed for the death of the child. Adults and grown up children who consumed the same milk got sick but somehow survived. Since there was only one death reported, the poor maid was held responsible and the authorities didn't bother to conduct any further investigations. This is how the so called system of (true) justice works in Saudi Arabia.

    Is there is any justice Indian Jail? How plice treated innoncent in Indian Jail, why only blaming Saudi Arabia, If any one want work in Saudi they must respect Saudi Law. Saud laws always fair and funish culprits without any concession. But in India Criminals are escpaing and innoncent get punsihment.

    People who blaming saudi law, will appreicate the heinus crime commited that House maid, killing 4 month baby?

    Praveen, You dont know the reality in Saudi. One cannot go their own when they want because passport will be in the hand of sponser. Many have not gone to home country for more than 5 years & they are trapped here especially housemaids. If she killed small baby & with money she vanishes, the yes i accept your point. By knowing the saudi rule & knowing she cannt escape from saudi if she done this crime then imagine here mental condition.

    think thrice...???? the sharia laws is applicable only to foreigners who come from other country to work in Saudi. as i am wrkin in saudi,i know more than anyone how the laws are working in saudi. there is no justice here..sad but true

    If she can not work there she can leave that employer and go back to her country or she can find other job. she killed a small baby . I do not regret for my comments. By mistake no one will kill some one.

    The main problem people face in Saudi is language, Once you encountr with police or law, It will be difficult to comeout clean. There is no access to any other people apart from the person who invloved. Also there is kind of discrimiation with Asian and europians. I lived in saudi so i know it, hard life if you involve an kind such incident. So people should be very careful.Sorry for the the girl and her family. It should not happenend to others at any cost.
