Mangalore, Jan 15: Pilikula Regional Science Centre in collaboration with Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology recently organized a one day workshop on transit of venus – astronomy programme for high school students. 

The objective of the programme was to reinforce interest among students regarding astronomical events and further involve actively themselves in astronomical science.  High school students in and around Pilikula were the targeted peer group.  About 60 students participated in the programme.

The programme was inaugurated by professor Ganesh Prabhu, retired professor of Canara College Mangalore.

Professor Ganesh Prabhu addressing the students said to take maximum advantage of this workshop as today’s students are the future scientists. He asked them to think, ask questions, clarify their doubts, become good scientists in future, find solutions for the problems of the society and be an asset to the society.

Dr K V Rao, director (training) of PRSC, Mangalore presided over the programme. Ramakrishna Marati, scientific officer of Dr Shivaram Karantha Pilikula Nisarga Dhama was present during the programme as the guest.

Poster competition on the topic ‘wonders of universe’ and essay competition on the topic ‘importance of astronomy’ was held for the students who participated in the programme.
The competition was followed by lecture by Dr H Jayantha, professor of St Agnes College, on the topic ‘observational astronomy’.

In the afternoon session, students were shown Taramandal show and explanation of science gallery models were also given by education assistants of Pilikula Regional Science Centre, Mangalore. 

At the end the programme students shared their experiences about the programme.
