Mangalore: ECG Learning Course Inaugurated at FMMC

Mangalore, Jan 19: A two-day ECG learning course was inaugurated at FMMC Decennial Memorial hall on Saturday January 19.

Dr A V Shetty, professor, Emeritus KMC was the chief guest. He inaugurated the course along with other dignitaries on the dais.

Fr Patrick Rodrigues, director of FMCI; Dr S B Gupta, president of Indian Society of Electrocardiology (ISE); Fr Denis D’Sa, administrator FMMC; Dr H Prabhakar, organizing chairman; Dr J P Alva, dean FMMC; Dr N Hegde, organizing vice chairman; Dr B S Rai, chief of medical services; Dr Sayyid K M, organizing secretary; Dr Usha P Rao, treasurer; Dr Ashish Nabar; and Dr Ketan Mehta shared the dais.

Dr A V Shetty in his keynote address said, "Even though ECG is a basic investigation in determining heart disease, these days it has been overlooked. ECG knowledge should mainly be taught at nursing and undergraduate levels and should be made compulsory."

‘ECG is a tricky thing but constant use will make is easy. It is a very useful and prime investigation in heart disease. While treating chest pain, even if the patient says that he does not have heart ailment, take ECG first as most of the heart attacks take place because no tests are done," he added, lauding the organizers of the course.

S B Gupta in his address said that the ECG course has been organized by Indian Society of Electrocardiology for the past 10 years. "Many new forms of investigations for heart disease have come up, but ECG has still survived which shows its importance even after 100 years old of its existence," said Gupta, urging the students to make the best use of it.

In his presidential address, Fr Patrick Rodrigues said that ECG is a basic investigation tool for heart disease but the sad part is these days it is not appreciated. He asked the people concerned to make the best use of it so that someone’s life could be saved.

"Besides creating awareness, this course will also help you in learning," he added and thanked all participants and organizers of the programme.

The ECG course was organized by Indian Society of Electrocardiology in collaboration with Father Muller Medical College.
