Mangalore: 1.5 kg hairball removed from 20-year-old's abdomen

Mangalore, Jan 22: A 1.5 kg hairball is removed from a 20-year-old young girl through a complex operation by a team of expert surgeons led by Dr Sibasis Bisoi at Indiana Hospital,Mangalore.

A 20-year-old girl was presented to Indiana Hospital with severe abdominal pain and vomitting whenever she took food. From the age of 2 years the patient was suffering from stomach pain. The patient was not diagnosed with permanent solution even though several evaluations was undergone by various health care centres.

The patient undergone endoscopy and CT-Scan for the detailed evaluation and diagnosed a hair ball in the stomach by Dr Hyder,Cheif Gastroenterologist,Indiana Hospital,Mangalore. The hair ball of 1.5kg was removed successfully from the abdomen.Usually the size of the hair ball would be from 5gms-50gms.The surgery was done by a team of doctors led by Dr Sibasis, Laproscopic Surgeon at Indiana Hospital on January 18,2013, the surgery lasted for 2-3hours. This is usually reffered as Trichobezoar.

Trichobezoars (hair ball) are usually located in the stomach, but may extend through the pylorus into the duodenum and small bowel (Rapunzel syndrome). Trichobezoar is a disease of eating their own hair unintentionally(trichophagia) or by recurrent impulsive pulling of one's hair for pleasure,gratification or relief of tension(trichotillomania).This kind of disease is usually seen in children and women less than 30years of age groups who most frequently suffer from this type of disorder.The common complaints include abdominal pain,vomiting,nausea,bloating,early satiety and weight loss.In addition to the surgery, psychiatric consultation is necessary to prevent relapses, said Dr Sibasis Bisoi, the Laproscopic Surgeon.

By this Indiana Hospital and Heart institue achieved a new milestone in the field of surgery, Dr Yusuf Kumble, MD added.
