Bangalore: State women's commission chairperson Manjula quits

Bangalore, Feb 1: In the wake of various developments caused by political upheavals in the state, Karnataka State Women’s Commission chairperson, C Manjula, whose tenure was marked by allround bitter criticism for her inability to handle the home stay attack incident in Mangalore in proper perspective, resigned from her post on Thursday January 30.

She however, attributed her decision to quit, to the apathy of the state government towards implementing the reports tabled by the commission relating to safety and security of women.

“The chief minister invites leaders of farming community for discussions before preparing the budget. But he has not shown the same gesture towards women representatives. Why are women being neglected by the government?” she questioned.

She also blamed the government for failing to respond to incidents of missing women, illegal home stays, serial rape including rape of a woman in Mandya district and several such incidents, and for failing to heed to the recommendations made in reports submitted by the commission on these incidents.

“I have the satisfaction of having worked as the head of commission for two years to the best of my capacity in spite of cold-shouldering the commission by the government. I had only ten months left in my term, and the commission suffers from lack of enough staff, separate police cell, inertia in the department of women and child welfare department etc. Because of rampant corruption, the officials of the commission, who are expected to devote their time and efforts for the service of women, are made to attend court sessions most of the time,” she added.
