Singer Mika Singh detained at Mumbai airport

Mumbai, Feb 7 (PTI): Bollywood singer Mika Singh was today detained at the international airport here for allegedly carrying Indian and foreign currency beyond permissible limit.

Singh, who arrived here from Bangkok by a private airline around 7.30 pm, was intercepted by customs officials.

During checking, he was found in possession of USD 12,000 and Rs 3 lakh in cash, a senior Customs official told PTI.

As per Customs norms, Indian passengers coming from abroad and carrying over Rs 7,500 and USD 5,000 need to make declaration about the same upon arrival, he said.

The 35-year-old singer was unable to give satisfactory answers about the currency in his possession, the official said, adding his statement was being recorded.

    Customs have an antiquated law. $12,000 is nothing nowadays especially for a person flying in private airline. After all, more foreign currency you bring in, it is better for the country's economy. I don't see any logic in restricting to bring in FC.

    United State as well as most countries allow to carry upto USD 10,000 without any declaration. What I understand Indian government allows USD 5,000 in cash and USD 5,000 in negotiable instruments such as travellers checks and bank drafts. This is not consistent with international norms. Staying in a good hotels in Mumbai costs around Rs.25,000 per day and if you charge your credit card, they add 3% foreign transaction fee.

    Please change the Indian Law and allow passengers to carry unto USD 10,000 per person in cash. After all, $10,000 is not a very big money considering the cost of living in India.

    Change your outdated rules and regulations....sickening....these rules only use is to help u guys to take bribes from poor and illeterate gulf expatriates...

    The customs need to change the rules as per the present earning status of Indians abroad and the one who travel abroad.Rs.7, 500 is not enough for a luxury taxi from Mumbai to Pune and USD 5000 is not enough for a week’s stay at Taj-Mumbai.The official who is assigned to accept declaration of currency above USD 5000 never show up at the designated counter and they always show a strange face. There are thousands of Indians travels who need thousands of US dollars for travel and shopping but the Indian law makers never show interest in changing the custom rules. The rules can be changed if they stop and check the foreign minister and other MP, MLA who travel often.
